I got talked in to going to my first Burn by a friend named Torsten in 2004. Didn't think it would be my kind of summer gathering, and didn't think I was up to the challenge either. Little did I know when my tires left the pavement and I tasted my first tang of playa dust that my life would never be the same again. (I wrote a story about that virginal experience in Black Rock City here.)

I returned to my civilian life and instantly made some major adaptations and upgrades to my existence. I was inspired and zingy and clear and newly extroverted. That buzz lasted me a full 3 years before I returned to Burning Man again in 2007, this time arriving on the scene with a full crew of over 40 people. We hailed primarily from northwest Washington State, were loosely organized under the "Boogie Universal" banner and came to the playa with a 40-foot tall pyramid. We set up a theme camp on the Esplanade, at the 9 o'clock keyhole, and hosted dance parties in our Boogie Pyramid all week -- until it blew down in a giant windstorm that is. (The entire story of the rise and fall of the Boogie Pyramid is told here.) (And another version is here.)

After an aborted attempt to go to my third Burning Man in 2008, I have my Evolution ticket and am looking forward to the portal opening again for me in 2009. I've cultivated a small tribe of friends I like to go there with -- DJ Edubious, Hekter McElliott, Ramona Mayhem, the aforementioned Torsten, hopefully new friends this summer -- and spend a goodly portion of the year daydreaming about BRC, shopping thrift stores for wigs and playawear, listening to our
dBM podcasts and watching videos from our burns and keeping up this here website, Destination Burning Man.

I've made a lot of friends in my community because of Burning Man and feel an affinity with most people who make the annual ritual a part of their daily life. I work hard at folding the lessons and insights and inspirations I gather on-playa in to my ongoing Default World lifestyle. I believe it to be the most powerful and craziest gathering I've ever been a part of and can see burning, at semi-regular intervals, right on in to my golden years.

I love to hear from other Burners who appreciate what this site -- a gift to the community-- has to offer: destinationburningman@gmail.com.
