"BM Temple 2010, 6/24/10" from the Temple of Flux Flickr pool.
A new team of Burners are hard at work constructing the next manifestation of the Temple for Black Rock City -- its called the Temple of Flux and is being constructed in San Francisco this summer. Here's some info on their vision from the Temple 2010 Facebook page:

"Artist and designers Jess Hobbs, Rebecca Anders, and Peter Kimelman collaborate on the building of Burning Man's 2010 Temple.

Drawing its inspiration from canyons carved by wind and water over time, the Temple of Flux rises from the playa floor as a series of graceful double curved walls. Their wide, heavy bases taper as they ascend, leading the eye from a solid urban foundation to an increasingly fragmented upper edge as these long angles reach to the sky.

The tallest of these walls is 40' with a footprint of roughly 140 x 100. The walls stand in an overlapping, linear layout, allowing access from all sides via passages of varying widths. The largest walls, describe a large chamber inside the array, creating space for gathering and celebration.

Our cities as massive structures have evolved over time, rising like mountains and spreading like the deserts. We look to them as places of permanence and wonder, where we inhabit the urban canyons carved by roads of commerce. The city differs little from the geological features in which we once dwelled: a metropolis too changes with time, shifting, growing, crumbling and eroding. The city will someday disappear altogether.

This Temple stands not as a habitable building, echoing churches and mosques from our histories, but as a counter-monument. We reference our impetus to create structure as well as relate to our environment. The Temple of Flux welcomes you to take respite and find strength at its feet. It beckons you to journey its pathways and follow its sensuous lines as they arc into the air."

The Temple team are blogging about the build at
http://temple2010.org/wordpress/. They're also -- of course -- raising money for their project, which benefits our entire community -- they've raised over $6,000 towards their $16,000 goal. You too can donate some funds via Kickstarter.com:

BBC in BRC
While dBM has produced and then offered up for viewing many videos over the past several years, it is always great for us to see somebody else's take on trying to interpret Burning Man through video. We were especially tickled by this heartfelt report from BBC Radio 1 and Booby Friction. From Burning Man 2009 Evolution :

Have to admit that any hesitations I've been holding towards going to BRC this year were pretty much erased as soon as I saw the scrub brush desert road leading up to the city and remembered the feeling one get when one's tires hit the playa and you pass through the portal...

Edub speaks : 9 days til departure

This is Burning Man and I have really enjoyed it so far.  It began 6 months ago on the Burnal Equinox mixing music with DJ Playaduster at Sunnyland.  Since that time the Three have brainstormed, dreamed, conspired, built, crafted, changed direction, fallen apart and put the pieces back together again.  The puzzle looks nothing like it did when we began, but that has been another part of the creative journey.  I have no doubt that it will continue to transform until we ourselves no longer resemble the beings we were in the beginning.

I am so looking forward to that transformation.  I am anxious to be wrapped in my cocoon of dust, sunlight, sound, creativity and humanity on the edge.  I anticipate uncomfortable friction as I try to fit into this wide open new space.  How can I exist in a space with no boundaries?  Who will emerge?  These are but two questions among the myriad that churn through my mind touching on topics from personal health and safety, to camp community building, to mind altering substances.  There are very few answers forthcoming.  A voice in the back of my head says “you just have to be there.”  Right now, that’s the problem.  My mind is there, racing toward the Burn and exploring the empty streets of Black Rock City, at the expense of my present moment awareness.

I don’t recall how long it has been since I have experienced this kind of lack of presence.  I value and actively practice being present to the moment – living in the Now.  But with 18 days until the Burn and 9 days until we leave, I am totally fixated on the future.  My work has become a nuisance to me; my schedule, a tether;  my day-to-day responsibilities, inconveniences.   It really is all about the Burn – now more than ever.

“I just have to…and I’ll be done.”  I’ve hear myself say this a lot - so has my wife.  Neither of us believes it anymore.  Last time I said this she replied, “You won’t be done until September when it’s over.”  I wonder if I’ll be done then.  Somehow I doubt it.

Despite having worked diligently over the past few months building, gathering and preparing, I feel frantic in these final days as I try to pull all of the threads together.  Mental, physical, spiritual and emotional preparation is coming together, but I feel as if I am watching an hour glass, sifting grain by grain counting down to my leap into the rabbit hole.  I’m ready.  There are still lots of details to finalize, but I’m ready.  Soon come!

BurningHamster Brainstorm I
A local Burner group has begun loose planning for an encampment/art project/installation/community event on playa in 2007. Stay tuned...
"I'm quite serious about doing something new with people from right
here in Bellingham. I kind of have a basic image in my head of what
it might look like, but really it's totally up for group input.

Here's what I'd like:

An enclosed and very intimate little interactive theme camp, largely
based around dancing, though open to include any other good ideas
too, operated by a drama-free easy-going small crew (maybe 10-15
people?).

What I've got to contribute:

I've got a 15,000 watt soundsystem that would sound outstanding at a
moderate volume in a small space.

8 inteligent Martin DMX lights and countless rope lights, black
lights, etc.

3 10'x20' carports (Costco barns)

1 22' geodesic dome with parachute cover

10' diameter fully enclosed DJ booth 14' tall (used by Lemuria &
Seacompression)

A commecrial serger (mega sewing machine) that could be useful for
making a cover for a structure).

I think my dome would be too small for the dance area (definately if
we use the DJ booth). Just a little bigger would be great--like
30'. I also have an image in my head of a pyramid of some sort. I'd
be up for building something with a couple of people if there are
such motivated individuals.

Basic camp stuff that we'd need to come up with:

Kitchen stuff:
I've got the shade structures that would be great for cooking,
eating, and camp-member chillin'. I think a communal stove/grill/bbq
would be nice and I'm a big fan of a meal plan (everyone cooks just a
couple of times, then the rest of the week your meals are made for
you).

Generator(s) I've been wanting to buy one for a while, we'll see. I
may have a connection or two in this department. Renting may be an
option.

Communal shade for camping. Not entirely required, but the last
couple of years my whole camp camped under a 200' parachute, which is
very nice. If we can't come up with something similiar, we could
each fend for ourselves and put a small shade structure over each
tent.

A rental truck to get it all there.

I'm used to paying $100-$150 in camp fees to take care of these kinds
of needs. I imagine a similiar contribution from each member might
do the trick--though if that's too much for some I'm sure we could
get flexible and creative.

There area few people interested in the Boogie Crew, though everyone
seems to be waiting to committ until others committ. Any interest
here on this list?
