This mix is an overview of the electronik sounds I am currently filling my head with, including several DJs I learned about for the first time at Burning Man 2009. Heavy San Francisco emphasis here, naturally, as that is where my favorite grooves are coming from these days. Special guests include Maketa, Scotty G. and Suga Cubed, recorded both in Black Rock City and on the road to home post-Burn, decompressing and reorienting from the Best Burn Ever. This is one of my favorite mixes I've ever spun out -- I really dig the flow between tracks and between sections and the sacred womp of the bass is cleansing to my soul. Hope you dig it too.

Last weekend I flew from Bellingham to San Francisco to take part in the many Halloween festivities in that fair & freaky city, as well as to reunite with approx. 1/3 of my playa family from Get Found. In addition to a boozy tour of the city on the Transported DJ-funbus, great meals and sock shopping on Haight Street, napping in the Panhandle and a stellar post-Halloween daytime renegade party at Toxic Beach hosted by Brass Tax, a highlight of the trip was certainly the Spiderball on Halloween night proper. It was held at the Bentley Reserve downtown -- an amazing space that used to be a federal treausry builing or something, all decked out in psychedliec Halloween vibes including a giant spider, zombie cheerleaders, Butoh performers, aerialists, bars, beds and couches, and much more -- and was obviously a gathering of mostly-local Burners, taking costumage to the next level, as we're known to do.
Music was provided by Beats Antique, Vibesquad and Random Rab -- three DJs I spent an inordinate amount of time listening to these days. Each performer brought a different vibe to the dancefloor and the party, with Beats being the most raucous and rowdy, Vibesquad bringing the heaviest, most focused bass and slamming beats, and Rab kinda chillin' the place back down with his 2-4 am set. It inspired me to post this here set of Rab spinning last spring in Seattle, around the time he released his excellent album aRose. Dig it!

Now that I've got all of the BM video shorts completed and posted, it is time to launch a video project with a broader scope -- I humbly offer up "EVOLUTION: Burning Man 2009" for your streaming and downloading pleasure. At just under a half-hour in length, this video seeks to celebrate Black Rock City in all of its ephemeral glory as well as commemorate the once-in-a-lifetime quickening of people that came together organically to form Camp Get Found at 3:30 & Lineage. This production utilized the photos and videos of many friends, as well as borrowed footage from Ben Wiggins, Mr. Nightshade and John Chavez. The soundtrack features Random Rab, Welder, ill.Gates, Ezekiel Honig, Nosaj Thing and Shpongle.

This last episde is a team favorite as it captures a very spontaneous and random performance by a marching band who came by at the right place at the right time and created a space for all of us to move out of our temple burn hypnosis.

BM09 video short #3 : Art Car Mayhem

As I was walking around aimlessly waiting for what seemed like an eternity for the Raygun Gothic Spaceship to "launch" on Thursday night, I was in awe of the collected energy and sound and lights. Everybody and their monkey had gathered in a giant circle around the spaceship, so it was not unlike Burn night, typically the only night of the week when everyone in Black Rock City are together and focused on a common something. It always makes for an intense scene when all of that madness and mayhem is concentrated like that. Anyway, I took out my beat-up playa camera and started recording video, capturing 1/100th of what I saw in the melee as I wandered around. I think the idea came to me when I heard the Spearhead remix coming out of a giant art car and I wanted to record it for my Spearhead-loving friend Edub (who was somewhere else in the chaos that night.)

The Tangled Path 2 : Convergence

Convergence: The process by which a similar character evolves independently in two species.
Convergent Evolution: The evolution of species from different taxonomic groups toward a similar form; the development of similar characteristics by taxonomically different organisms.
Burning Man: A great convergence of tribes from all corners of the planet; takes place the week before Labor Day weekend each year in the remote northwest corner of Nevada on a dry lakebed in the Black Rock Desert. The combination of common intention, sleep deprivation, freedom and dust storms creates the ideal medium for convergent evolution to take place at a rapid pace; from many into The ONE.
"The Tangled Path" dyad concludes with this latter installment, "Conjunction" (subtitles include "Funk Getting Ready to Roll" and "Fuzzy Biscuit Bass for Black Rocky City".) It follows on the heels of "Loose Ends," which found our fuzzy band of traveling Burners tumbling through time and space on various personal pathways throughout 2008, on and off playa. "Conjunction" moves the story towards its conclusion as, in anticipation of Burning Man 2009, the same love-filled freedom-seeking souls begin to pull back together into something cohesive -- a dream of togetherness that won't fully be realized until we all hit the playa at the end of August 2009.
Narratives include the birth and evolution of Camp dBM with Edubious, Moontroll and Grapenuts, as well as as missives from the heart of Black Rock City from Hekter in 2008. Ramona and Scotty G. join the mob with their own insights. Artists in this audio journey include Bluetech, Major Lazer, Z-Trip, Alter Echo, Erykah Badu, Kid Cudi, Beastie Boys, TV on the Radio, Nas, Herbaliser, Boxcutter, Roots Manuva, Flying Louts, Jaydiohead, Moby, Random Rab, Massive Attack, Beats Antique, Mimosa, Bassnectar, MAd Professor, Michael Jackson, The Roots, Funkadelic and Nosaj Thing.
This progressive blend of the brand-spankin' new alongside old classics represents everything I have to say about music in Black Rock City in one long-ass, delirious, whacked-out, turn-your-ears-inside-in mix. I threw everything I had left into this, my last musical melange missive before Burning Man 2009 : Evolution.

The Tangled Path 1 : Loose Ends

Evolutionary Psychejuju

40-some days until the 2009 Burn, y'all > here's a mix from Radio DBM that is full of serious world-beat psychejuju to keep your preparations for the playa moving along on the good foot.
I was meditating on evolution while spinning out this set, particularly how species develop at different paces in different places around the planet. I love how one bird species, for example, will look and behave totally different from continent to continent, morphing form and behavior to match the physical ecosystem. But I also appreciate how all of life shares a common foundation, animated by the mysterious cosmic spark.
How does any of this apply to "Evolutionary Psychejuju"? Music is both universal as well as totally local. It begins with the heartbeat, and evolves in to a groove, a language every human can understand. I love how indigenous music is fitted to a particular place -- how the heat and aridity of Mali, the rhythm of the waves in Jamaica, the humid fecundity of Columbia have each inspired their own musical traditions. And I also love the ways in which some artists combine and blend those traditions in new and surprising ways. Musical evolution on a global scale. That's some of the thinking going on behind the scenes here at Radio dBM in the production of this here mix.

Blame it on the Boogie : A Tribute to Michael Jackson (Part 2)

Part 2 of my Michael Jackon Tribute series picks up where Part 1 ends, delving back in to the "Thriller" era before committing to an extended appreciation of "Bad" and then dropping in on a fast-paced, booty-rockin' exploration of MJ's underappreciated Late Period. I had no idead he was still putting out such amazing and ground-breaking music post-"Bad," tracks like "Scream", "They Don't Care About Us", "2 Bad", "Xscape" and "Jam." Like Part 1, this mix tells the MJ story through nontraditional tracks: home demos, remixes, dubs and rare tracks. I've been listening to both constantly these past 2 weeks, with mad appreciation for MJ's gift of groove to the world.
Against my better judgement, I had to start a third (and hopefully final!) installment in the tribute series. As I was mixing this one up, I kept finding amazing remixes and rarities online, but I wanted Part 2 to come in at under 80 minutes so it could be burned to CD, and the incoming rush of MJ music had to spill over in to a 3rd mix. A Michael Jackson "Trilogy" was unplanned when I first started out, but that is what this process has naturally evolved in to, so there it is. The man just put out too much great music -- blame it on the boogie!

Blame it on the Boogie : A Tribute to Michael Jackson (Part 1)

What could Burning Man and Michael Jackson possibly have in common? No jokes about how his hair exploded in to a flameball during the filming of that Pepsi commercial, please. I'm being serious here, and have thought about this question hard over the past week since learning of the King of Pop's passing to the other side. I've been thinking about the things I appreciate most about Burning Man -- freedom of expression, originality, devotion to creativity, genuineness, heart and soul, being brave enough to fully embody one's true self -- and feel like these qualities all came together in MJ and his music.
I felt moved to celebrate the gifts he gave to this world by making a musical mix that explores the evolution of the artist from his early career to the end. This musical journey starts with some selections from the Jackson 5, of course, before exploring Michael Jackson's early solo career, with a multifaceted look at "Off the Wall" and his original melding of disco grooves with Motown soul. Eventually, we reach "Thriller," looking at half of the album's hits from various different perspectives, before running out of time at the 79:45 mark -- just the right length to be able to burn this mix to CD. Part two, to be released in a couple of weeks, picks up with the second half of Thriller and runs through various side projects and the most intriguing sounds from his later releases.
Now, those listeners looking for a run-through of his greatest hits can, well, purchase or dig out his many "Greatest Hits" collections. In other words, this ain't your mamas Michael Jackson. The mix is built on alternate takes, mash-ups, early home demos, interviews and, especially, remixes. There are many, many remixes of Michael floating around out there in cyberspace, and I chose a wide variety of reinterpretations: some ready to bump your booty, some corny and others just plain weird.
I reveled in the wide, creative diversity of remixes that MJ inspired, and listening to them over the past week, it dawned on me just how universal his music was -- there was an essential DNA of heart, soul and groove in just about everything he performed, and those core elements were able to be fit in and reprogramed in all kinds of musical scenarios. House, reggae, grunge, glitch, ambient -- Michael's words and voice sounded natural in so many different genres and environments, in part because it was so real. And I guess that is why he was loved the whole world over -- his gift of song was universal. It touched the heart and moved the booty, no matter what culture or creed.

Darwin's Furrowed Brow

Edubious is back in cyberspace Dubcasting on Radio dBM! Theis Darwin's Furrowed Brow mix is a follow up to Darwin's Weird Beard - the second Burning Man Evolution-themed podcast from DJ Plyaduster. the world's first and only Sunnyland Burning Man ceremony in 2006 -- I'm amazed the fire dept. didn't show up when I torched this dude!
This here podcast, the latest from your good friends at Destination Burning Man, has been sitting in the outbox for over a year now. Why it was never released until now is not known. It is the last musical mix concocted at the Sunnyland Soundsystem, where www.destinationburningman.com and www.podcastcafe.org were originally conceived and born. It represents an amiable clash between two imaginary alter-egos, DJ Playaduster and DJ Fundi.
Playaduster is known to be a bit crazier, a bit nastier and a lot more focused on electronica, dub, glitch and dance music -- his specialty is getting the party from lift-off up in to orbit and Black Rock City is his natural environment.
Fundi, on the other hand, is a more gentle soul and has a wider berth in the world of music -- he'll spin a jazz set, an acoustic/bluegrass set, even a set of drone music from Tibet, and is not afraid to mix some Beethoven, Beck and Beatles in the flow. He's certainly known to throw down a solid funk set -- see "Soundtrack for a Kitchen Dance Party", "Superbad" or "Deep Fried Funky Nuggets" for three fine examples -- but he tends towards the more organic laid-back style of funk.
What happens when the two of them meet and throw down at a soundsystem in its final days? Well, that is what this mix is all about. Can you guess which tracks are from Fundi and which are from Playaduster? We'll call it a Fundiduster mix if we must...

Yes We Did : Obama Hopecast : Part 2

Part two of a two-part series (click here for part one) -- released Inauguration Day 2009!
Left speechless & shaking with an intense, spiritual joy after the 2008 presidential election, I was so happy for myself, for my country and for the whole entire world that I came to a rare loss for words. This "hopecast" is my best attempt to describe and share some portion of the mix of emotions the election of Barack Obama has inspired in me. It is especially informed by looking backwards, because you can't know where you're going unless you know where you've come from.
Part two centers around Obama's election night victory speech in Chicago, interspersed with Martin Luther King's "I Have a Dream" speech from the March on Washington in 1963: "I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the colour of their skin but by the content of their character." Bob Marley, the Neville Brothers, Bill Frisell, Marvin Gaye, Common, Z-Trip, Bonobo, James Brown, the Blind Boys of Alabama, George Clinton, Fela, Prince, Public Enemy and assorted hymns, field hollers and cameos from Dubya inform this tribute, along with a cast of dozens more.
I hope that my Hopecast serves as an audio record of history in the making, set to a fitting groove. Viva Obama!
