DJ subRoutine live set at the Root
Society, Burning Man 2009
26/December/09 | permalink

After those last two holiday-themed podcasts released here on dBM, it's time to get dirrrty again. Vancouver BC's DJ subRoutine provides us over 80 minutes of smoothly-blended progressive house from his live set in the Morpheus Dome at the Root Society, Burning Man 2009. We like to keep the sounds mixed up and unpredicatable here at dBM and hope this set hits you right.

Last weekend I flew from Bellingham to San Francisco to take part in the many Halloween festivities in that fair & freaky city, as well as to reunite with approx. 1/3 of my playa family from Get Found. In addition to a boozy tour of the city on the Transported DJ-funbus, great meals and sock shopping on Haight Street, napping in the Panhandle and a stellar post-Halloween daytime renegade party at Toxic Beach hosted by Brass Tax, a highlight of the trip was certainly the Spiderball on Halloween night proper. It was held at the Bentley Reserve downtown -- an amazing space that used to be a federal treausry builing or something, all decked out in psychedliec Halloween vibes including a giant spider, zombie cheerleaders, Butoh performers, aerialists, bars, beds and couches, and much more -- and was obviously a gathering of mostly-local Burners, taking costumage to the next level, as we're known to do.
Music was provided by Beats Antique, Vibesquad and Random Rab -- three DJs I spent an inordinate amount of time listening to these days. Each performer brought a different vibe to the dancefloor and the party, with Beats being the most raucous and rowdy, Vibesquad bringing the heaviest, most focused bass and slamming beats, and Rab kinda chillin' the place back down with his 2-4 am set. It inspired me to post this here set of Rab spinning last spring in Seattle, around the time he released his excellent album aRose. Dig it!

Here's a video I shot of Rab and the Spiderball dancefloor around 3 in the morning -- apologies for the horrid sound:
Now I'm starting to think about the next Bay Area Burner throwdown, the Sea of Dreams ball on New Year's Eve, with Bassnectar, Rab, An-ten-ae, Glitch Mob, MartyParty, etc. How can I resist?!?! I cannot.

Bassnectar
06/June/08 | permalink

Recently found this mix from San Francisco DJ superstar Basnectar. He was far and away one of the best new discoveries DJs Edubious and Playaduster made on playa. There really isn't any way to describe the scene when Bassnectar is spinning, or tweaking knobs, or whatever it is he does behind the decks. We witnessed Bassnectar inspire frenzied neo-pagan communcal desert stomps at places like Entheon Village, Cirque Bezerk and the "Seizure Dome" that forced us to reassess everything we thought we knew about DJ'ing, dancing and music in general.
This podcast gives a taste of what he's up to, though it pales in comparison to hearing the nectar pour forth from massive sound installations beneath the moon in Black Rock City...

I found a dusty, crusty CD in the Boogie Universal kitchen the morning after Rootabreaka performed in the Boogie Pyramid and it had this very mix on it, compliments of BIM Tim. I just had to share it with y'all. The playa seems so, so far away right now and I hope this mix brings a few particles of it back. It does for me. I made sure to ask BIM Tim if he's cool with me posting it here and he wrote back:

"The Road to Burningman" by Latenight
Freakout's Caveman

Hey DJ Playaduster: Thanks for the
kudos on the mix CD -- it was an awesome piece of the multifaceted
experience that is burningman. Playing a sunrise set with
the Latenight Freakout Odyssey at the Boogie Universal camp Sunday
morning after the Burn was also a bizarre and magical
experience...

You absolutely may post the mix on your
podcast section. In fact, I could not think of a better place than
destinationburningman for a mix called "The Road to Burningman" to
reside.
One interesting tidbit about the name of the mix that I like is that is has spiritual and literal context behind the name. In preparing myself and the band for burningman (preparation is a road in itself), I had spent alot of time in ableton writing music/concepts for our future creative expressions on playa. This mix contains two of my remixes that were spawned off of this creative process. So in a sense, this mix CD and the band performances at burningman fulfilled my desire to participate by bringing art in the form of music to burningman.

The second literal meaning of the name of the mix, is the fact that the mix was actually performed in an RV as me and a good friend of mine drove to burningman from the SF bay area. I did the mix in Ableton live on a macbookpro with a m-audio trigger finger on my lap. All of the bumps in the road made mixing all the more challenging ;)
Most of the CD's that I handed out at burningman were burned while we waited almost 3 hours to get through the gate.
