Another installment in the celebrated Whomp Massive series--inspired low-end collages for your personal Bass Chakra Therapy practice. This one starts slow and languid, taking its time before Nico Luminous starts getting rowdy with "Swamp Gate" and we achieve Whomp Massive lift-off at precisely minute 17:46. The rest is bass gravy……

Michael Menert "Eventide" (edit)
ps. one of my most vivid, blissful memories of Burning Man 2012 was swinging freely on an oversized swing set behind the DJ stand at False Prophet's annual Tuesday Night party on the Esplanade. The sense of weightlessness, the backdrop of innumerable stars against the inky black eternity of sky, the empathic bass and blinky lights and love and dust….After the Polish Ambassador's playa debut, ChrisB took the party to the next level with his confident bass-slinging of daring low-end frequencies to a very supportive crowd of movers & groovers…..perfect!

Subterranean Homesick Blues : Dreamstep II

Mixed by DJ Playaduster, December 2012
A strange and slightly unsettling journey through bass & space music past and present, intuitively guided by DJ Playaduster in the dark heart of winter. This is a weird one, folks, where Playaduster followed the muse wherever she wandered, accepting her guidance and translating the cosmic downloads in to beats, bass and sideways swerves. Not for casual listening, but rewarding if you want to buy the ticket and take the ride!

Threshold (Open Me Slowly)

Mixed by DJ Playaduster, December 2012
Here's one more dBMcast for 2012 and the first to actually feature some of the soundstick recordings captured at Burning Man 2012. dBMcast #117 features Moontroll of Get Found reporting from the road to Gerlach, and from the exciting moment when one's vehicles leaves pavement and hits the playa, and from the line to get in to the city when a whiteout dust storm stopped all movement. Moontroll is geared towards that once-a-year passage through the Portal to the other side, and his excitement is palpable. Ride shotgun with him as he approaches the Threshold to another world of magic and mystery, a journey with an undulating soundtrack of forward-leaning bass music that touches on electroboogie, dubstep, ambient, world beat, breaks and other styles.
As this mix is about thresholds, portals, journeys and crossings, you'll also hear contributions from Terrence McKenna speaking on UFOs and spirit molecules and a science report on recent NASA searches for elusive portals that spontaneously open and close in the Earth's magnetosphere.
Track list:
Break Science "Forest of Illumination"
Elliott Lipp "The Sunset"
Michael Menert "Take All You Want"
Kaminanda "The Portal"
Sugarpill "Bring It Back"
eDIT "Mildew"
Rena Jones "Open Me Slowly"
Beats Antique "Hero"
Nicholas Jaar "Colomb"
DJ/rupture "Save from the Flames All That Yet Remains"
Pantha du Prince "Stick To My Side" (Four Tet remix)
Grizmatik "Digital Liberation in Mad Freedom"
GRiZ + Big Gigantic "Power"
Minnesota "Yoga Pants"
Nico Luminous "808s & Earthquakes > Puddle Town"
Andreilien "Ganja Mashup"
EPROM "Honey Badger"

Kindred Spirit Funk Beacon
dBMcast #115: Kindred Spirit Funk Beacon (320 kbps)
Mixed by DJ Playaduster & DJ Fundi, October-November 2012
Is there life after whomp? Or, as this mix sets out to explore, life before whomp? To find out, DJs Playaduster and Fundi (from our sister site The Podcast Cafe) dug deep to create this "old-school" (not that old!) outing of jazz-funk, electrobeats, triphop, turntablism, soul and downtempo grooves. It features classic tracks from well-loved musicians and DJs including Mr. Scruff, Bonobo, St. Germain, Quantic, DJ Logic, Q-Tip, Thievery Corporation, Boozoo Bajou, Monta at Odds, Medeski Martin & Wood, Jurassic 5, Jamie Woon, Jon Kennedy and Zero 7. Lost Track of Time

dBMcast #114: Lost Track of Time (320 kbps)
Mixed by DJ Playaduster, October 2012
More often than not, DJ Playaduster's dBMcasts choose a musical genre and explore the various electronic permutations of that vibe over an hour-and-a-half. In this new mix, the genres are blended, one flowing in to the next, an undulating river of blending sounds and spirits. This is a sonic exploration that goes off the map, a journey through progressive grooves and forward-leaning beats: Bass Chakra Therapy alongside deep house, Gypsy whomp vs. ambient spacestep, fractured glitchhop rubbing up against pop music remixes. Playaduster was guided by intuition on this excursion and the results are exquisitely interesting, both for a headphones chill-out session or a dance floor adventure.
We might also note that at the heart of this mix is a long cut from Pachanga Boys entitled "Time" — a bit of an unusual choice for DJ Playaduster. This was the beat that Robot Heart often played to meet and greet the first rays of the rising sun out on the playa, so it is packed with meaning and memory for many of us RH junkies at Burning Man 2012!
Other artists include Flying Lotus * Ricardo Villalobos * Nico Luminouos * Jupit3r * SBTRKT * Radiohead * Four Tet * The Polish Ambassador * Sugarpill * Nicholas Jaar * GRiZ * Beats Antique * Filastine * JoBOT

Interdimensional Lounge Music

Mixed by DJ Playaduster, September 2012 -- first dBMcast post-Burning Man 2012!
Well, that was a BIG FUN TIME!
Yes yes yes Burning Man 2012 served us right and now we're back home in the Default World, dusting off, processing all the brilliant stimuli we saw tasted heard and felt, and trying to bring the best of it all back to our lives and relationships and work here at our "other home." I was extremely pleased with the amount of art on the playa this year -- major installations, interactive light and sound contraptions, quiet remote pieces in Deep Playa -- and boogied my ass off most nights at dance parties both enormously over-the-top and tiny family-style. I received a walloping whomping dose of Bass Chakra Therapy from Fractal Nation, Robot Heart, False Prophet, Buddha Lounge, Bass Camp & others, and lately have been seeking mellower sounds that act as a healing balm to blown-out mind and soul.
This new mix is mostly downtempo, smooth, bubbling, spacey, warm and user-friendly. I am inspired by the sounds I heard at various lounge/chill parties where the music was soothing yet psychedelic, low-key but intriguing, somehow existing both in the background and foreground at the same time. The title is borrowed from a track featured here by The Polish Ambassador and the artwork/photographs are of my favorite interdimensional lounge of 2012: Star Seed by artist Kate Raudenbush.
Interdimensional Lounge Music features tunes by Sugarpill * The Polish Ambassador * Kalya Scintilla * Tipper * Bonobo * Pretty Lights * Nicholas Jaar * The xx * Emancipator * Thriftworks * Andreilien * & Gladkill.

What the Mixtape?! (Side Two)

Greetings friends near and far, met and unmet, DJ Playaduster here representing Destination Burning Man with Side Two of What the Mixtape?!
Get yourself ready for a hour long mix of electronic music based on DJs and producers who played at What the Festival?! in Oregon the last weekend of July 2012. This was the best festival my PNW Get Found crew and I have ever experienced off the playa and the rush of inspiration we felt in the White River canyon has carried over in to this 2 side music mix tape project. From the environment to the art to the people to the lighting to the vibes to the splash pool and ESPECIALLY to the expertly curated schedule of to-notch DJs, the organizers did it right. We can't thank them enough for all the special touches, large and small.
We're going to explore some of the more experimental bass frequencies that What the Festival offered, including Sepalcure, Scuba and Sinjin Hawke, taste some acid crunk from Low Ryderz, get soothed with a long set from Emancipator and dabble in some forward-leaning low-end wavelengths from Gladkill, Bluetech, PhuturePrimitive and Sugarpill.

What the Mixtape?! (Side One)

I’m just back from the first-ever What the Festival?! in the White River Canyon of Oregon and am so incredibly inspired by what went down there: an eclectic roster of top-shelf DJ talent dropping their jams through Function One soundsystems, the gorgeous landscape accentuated by art and light installations, lots of chill spaces full of kind and creative people, good food, minimal security and hilarious pool parties during the heat of the day – I can’t say enough good things about this gathering and the team that put it on. Big ups to the Zanzibar crew for pulling this off so flawlessly, and to my own Get Found family for representing the love.
Side one of What the Mixxtape?! features some of the artists I saw and danced my ass off to, with a focus on the glitch-hop, dubstep, acid crunk, whomp and other soundz from the heavier end of the Bass Chakra spectrum, including Bonobo, Beats Antique, GRiZ, Gladkill, Ana Sia, MartyParty, Sugarpill, EPROM and Paper Diamond. Next week I’ll put out Side 2 with sounds trending house, ambient, experimental and sacred bass.
With 29 days until the Man burns, fevered excitement is in the air. I hope this What the Mixxtape?!, along with other recent episodes like Desert Dreamers and Shimmer, provide you the ultimate soundtrack for your playa preparations.

Desert Dreamers : An Indo-African Alchemy Dub Experience

Mixed by DJ Playaduster & Kaya Rainface in July 2012
and shared with humility in "earthy family style."
Prepare yourself for an intergalactic soundwave excursion to the Indian subcontinent and choice African destinations with DJs Playaduster and Kaya Rainface. Originally inspired by my discovery of the amazing Desert Dwellers remix project and the new Dirtwire project from Beats Antique, this musical journey invokes caravans in the desert, mystical night wanderings, starlight, throngs of pilgrims seeking visions on the playa, uttered prayers and whispered secrets, meditation, tribal gatherings, tea ceremonies, transcendent dancing, spices and scents. With plenty of earthy bass tones to ground our seekings, the mix floats towards the heavens on the wings of sitar, violin, cello, tabla, kamel ngoini and voice.
Featuring Desert Dwellers * Drumspyder * Filastine * Cheb i Sabbah * Bassnectar * Dirtwire * Kaminanda * Miles Davis * Kurt Rosenwinkel * Seun Kuti * Four Tet * Tinariwen * Issa Bagayoyo * Adham Shaikh * Eastern Sun * The Beatles * Yo- Yo Ma * Random Rab * Kalya Scintilla * Beats Antique * Nicolas Jaar * Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan * Massive Attack * Bobby McFerrin * Sacred System * TJ Rehmi * Mari Boine * Future Prophecies.

Shimmer : Dreamstep for Dubheads

dBMcast #107: Shimmer : Dreamstep for Dubheads
Mixed by DJ Playaduster May-June 2012
With dBMcast #107, DJ Playaduster has woven a sonic tapestry designed to induce dream states and facilitate astral projections. With rumbling bass as our Earthly grounding, we float past nebuli, vortexes and voyaging spacecraft on the wings of violin, percussion, guitar, trumpet and more. If you listen closely, you'll hear Moontroll & Orbit encountering the Temple for the first time at Burning Man 2010.
Have a look around. Smell the colors. Feel the low-end textures massage the tender places in your Bass Chakra. Taste the salty stardust. Relax. Let go….There are no sharp edges or rough transitions here, so you can close your eyes, lay back and take the ride with full trust in the interstellar navigational skills of DJ Playaduster.

Subconscious Shapeshifter Swarm

A subsonic sacred bass exploration with DJ Playaduster channeling a night at Burning Man. Imagine traveling between several different soundscapes late one night in Black Rock City: your first stop features whomp-fusion, glitch-hop and luscious low-end bass jamz to start the party. But then you wander a couple doors down the Esplanade to discover a camp spinning psychedelic progressive house and you get lost there for what seems like an eternity of booty-shaking. Robot Heart rolls by and draws you deeper out in to the open playa for a serving of dark and dubby disco-trance music. Mmmmmmm, feels so good! Right about the moment you suspect that you are going to turn in to a puddle of goo from dancing to such elastic, nerfy beats, a random art car -- perhaps a golf cart made up as a glowfish, or a pulsating fuzzy UFO -- drives by blaring Hendrix and the rawness and realness of his guitar pulls you back to corporeal form. Out at the trash fence, you stumble upon Tipper spinning an early morning set full of neuron-splintering sounds and feel your DNA literally being reprogrammed…. almost sunrise!
All of these various styles and genre-mutations sound so good to your ears -- they move your body hypnotically, swarm your subsconscious with shapeshifters and create an epic night of dancing beneath the broad dome of stars with the beautiful freaks of BRC!
Featuring Kaminanda / David Starfire / Beats Antique / ill.gates / Glitch Mob / R/D / Bassnecter / Osunlande / Tanner Ross / Round Three / Kassem Mosse / Behrouz / Jimi Hendrix (?!?) / Tipper/ more...

The Larry Harvey Dub Experience

Here’s a new mix from DJ Playaduster, with special guest Larry Harvey, founding visionary of Burning Man. The audio is from a recent talk he gave in San Francisco at the Burning Man Regional Convectional Caucus that was recorded and broadcast by Shouting Fire. He is pontificating on the early roots of Burning Man, some of the principles Burners adhere to, and ways in which the Black Rock City culture is spreading out in to the default world in surprising ways.
The music is a mix of style from whomp to dubstep, glitch to jazz. Many of the tracks are taken from the Ninja Tune XX compilation. Hopefully this soundscape presents many of the tempos and feelings one would get wandering around Black Rock City at night.
Featuring Amon Tobin (King Cannibal remix) * Andreya Triani (Mala remix) * Bonobo (Floating Points remix) * Anti-Pop Consortium (Four Tet remix) * Thom Yorke + Four Tet + Burial * Wolf + Lamb * The Bug * Coldcut * "White Rabbit" dubstep remix * R/D * MiMosa * Pretty Lights * Vibesquad * Eskmo (Lorn remix) * Burial * Radiohead * Dorian Concept * Jazz Jagist (Grasscut remix)

As the Burnal Equinox passes us by, we slip and slide our way down the slope towards another trip to Black Rock City. Burning Man 2011 begins to infiltrate my daily thoughts as I consider what Rites of Passage will rise up to meet me and my merry band of Get Foundlings. Here's a heavy-duty blend of bass music -- dubstep, whomp, glitch-hop, lazer -- to wake us out of our winter slumber and slap us silly in to the spring. This is not your mama's bass -- get ready to be aurally spanked! This is the time of year for cleansing and new growth, and this mix is designed to knock the moss off of your bass chakras as we stumble towards the playa, alone and together.

Chiron Transmission 1 : Golgotha

Greetings from the friendly Burners here at Destination Burning Man, and welcome to the latest mix from DJ Playaduster: "Chiron Transmissions 1 : Golgotha." Much of this podcast is shrouded in mystery and codes, but it appears to be a missive sent from the outer fringes of our solar system, a musical message that originates from the proto-comet Chiron.
New MP3 Player (works on mobile devices)
Old MP3 Player
Discovered in 1977 in its eccentric orbit between Saturn and Uranus, Chiron is known in some circles as the "Rainbow Bridge" or "Wounded Healer," a humble, benevolent guide that can assist humans by keeping us moving forward on our proper spiritual paths. In early February 2011, Chiron entered the watery realm of Pisces, activating the pure power of potential, the manifestation of the unconscious and transformative healing through (re)union with the divine.
The frequencies found in this podcast are believed to have originated from Chiron, with DJ Playaduster serving as a musical midwife in order that they be perceived by the human ear and widely disseminated through our dBM channels.
Contributing artists include Bill Laswell, Rena Jones, Phaelah, Tipper, Heyoka, James Blake, Boards of Canada, Aphex Twin, DJ/rupture, Kim Hiorthoy, Ezekiel Honig, Yo-Yo Ma, Shackleton, PantyRaid and Thriftworks, with vocal musings from Joni Mitchell, Timothy Leary, Hekter McElliott, Pema Chodron and the Tangerines.

Grace in Bass

Cleaning out the vaults of 2010 to make space for new freshness in 2011, I came across this neglected mix that hadn't been posted yet. Deep in the wintertime of 2010, working through some personal struggles in my isolated zendo on an island in Washington State, I began exploring a new system of healing: Bass Chakra Therapy. Subwoofers or high-quality headphones are required; intoxicants optional but recommended.
"Grace in Bass" is the cosmic cousin of "Subsonic Sonata," a mix released last May. I mixed both from a common playlist that gathered together tracks that exemplified the healing qualities of bass in its many mysterious and mystical forms. Both mixes have a meditative quality to them and bass elements that are thick, sinuous, mostly gentle, inquisitive and with unique bass chakra massaging qualities.
Artists includes Timonkey * Heyoka * Vibesquad * Boxcutter * Mike Monday * Shackleton * Zero 7 * Luke Vibbert * Rusko * Clubroot * Four Tet * Ooah * Nosaj Thing * The Field. Artwork by Android Jones.
"Grace in Bass" and "Subsonic Sonata" both got me through some really dark, isolated days of winter. I hope they do some good work for you too.

JOYISM : Got Found? (Part 1)

"There is a house built out of stone
Wooden floors, walls and window sills...
Tables and chairs worn by all of the dust..
This is a place where I don't feel alone
This is a place where I feel at home.......
Cause, I built a home
for you
for me
Until it disappeared
from me
from you
And now, it's time to leave and turn to dust…….."

Subsonic Sonata

This one's dedicated to the devastating beat creator......
How does this latest mix from DJ Playaduster fit in with his recently-unleashed Bass Chakra Therapy / Wobble Chronicles series?
It is still unclear how this particularly tasty blend of bass-positive music fits in with alla that chakra therapy bidness and we are open to theorizing from dedicated listeners. But this much we know: there is still the continuity of serious down-low subwoofer-friendly basshead music mixed into a flowing river of soulful low-end revelry. One difference is that this poem is less dependent on Whomp and Glitch and other Left Coast bass-hop tomfoolery.
Instead, it moves across varying landscapes of moody, swirling, dense grooves and emotions. BASS is the only constant, the liturgy speaking to the recesses of your primal animal soul.
Subsonic Sonata features Luke Vibert / Shackleton / Fever Ray / Bluetech / Nosaj Thing / Boxcutter / Zomby / Rustie / Matt Shadetek / Mimosa / Noah D. Roomate / Roots Manuva / Coldcut / Hedfunk / Four Tet / Burial / Ana Sia / ill.Gates / Heyoka / Bassnectar / Tipper and / The Field \\.

WHOMP MASSIVE

A smokin' mix of epic booty bangers from the World of Whomp. These are the grooves that light my fuse these days. All killer, no filler. Bumpin all night. A therapeutic bath of bass for proper chakra therapy upgrades. etc etc etc
This mix tape features fresh tracks, some barely a week old, from artists including // Mimosa / Ooah / R/D / Adam Freeland / An-ten-ae / Bassnectar / ill.Gates / Beats Antique / Heyoka / Bonobo / The xx / Nosaj Thing / MartyParty / PantyRaid / Fever Ray / Pretty Lights (and more Beats and Nectar at the end) \\. Glitchatronik Dubstraps * Bass Chakra Therapy (Advanced)
This is the third installment in DJ Playaduster's Wobble Chronicles project, providing a soundtrack for personal Bass Chakra Therapy explorations and practices. This episode is specially-designed for advanced practicioners as it explores the heavier, glitchier, dubsteppier side of the Whomp music. Not for casual listening, nor for the casual listener.
Soundtrack provided by //Ana Sia / Bassbin Twins / Ooah / Mochipet / Mimosa / Rusko / The Bug + Warrior Queen / Beats Antique / ill.gates / Eskmo / Ill-esha / Glitch Mob / Heyoka / Boxcutter//
Vocals harvested from various ridiculous encounters and adventures in Seattle, Samish Island and San Francisco, including field reports from New Year's Eve at the Sea of Dreams in SF. Ocean waves are from beaches at Point Reyes & Salmon Creek, CA.

Whompadelic * Bass Chakra Therapy (Intermediate)

Another Bass Chakra Thearpy session from DJ Playaduster -- this time an intermediate level mix for those who have already absorbed the teachings found within the first introductory BCT session.
Vocals woven in to this session include soundstick recordings from the Halloween/Spiderball experience in San Francisco, the Get Found reunion at the Samish Island Zendo and the night Team Love danced all night in puddles to DJs on the top of the old Rainier Brewery in Seattle. This episode, in other words, tracks the post-playa adventures of our furry, fuzzy family up and down the Pacific Coast in the waning months of 2009.

Bass Chakra Therapy (Introductory)

This mix is an overview of the electronik sounds I am currently filling my head with, including several DJs I learned about for the first time at Burning Man 2009. Heavy San Francisco emphasis here, naturally, as that is where my favorite grooves are coming from these days. Special guests include Maketa, Scotty G. and Suga Cubed, recorded both in Black Rock City and on the road to home post-Burn, decompressing and reorienting from the Best Burn Ever. This is one of my favorite mixes I've ever spun out -- I really dig the flow between tracks and between sections and the sacred womp of the bass is cleansing to my soul. Hope you dig it too.

The Tangled Path 2 : Convergence

Convergence: The process by which a similar character evolves independently in two species.
Convergent Evolution: The evolution of species from different taxonomic groups toward a similar form; the development of similar characteristics by taxonomically different organisms.
Burning Man: A great convergence of tribes from all corners of the planet; takes place the week before Labor Day weekend each year in the remote northwest corner of Nevada on a dry lakebed in the Black Rock Desert. The combination of common intention, sleep deprivation, freedom and dust storms creates the ideal medium for convergent evolution to take place at a rapid pace; from many into The ONE.
"The Tangled Path" dyad concludes with this latter installment, "Conjunction" (subtitles include "Funk Getting Ready to Roll" and "Fuzzy Biscuit Bass for Black Rocky City".) It follows on the heels of "Loose Ends," which found our fuzzy band of traveling Burners tumbling through time and space on various personal pathways throughout 2008, on and off playa. "Conjunction" moves the story towards its conclusion as, in anticipation of Burning Man 2009, the same love-filled freedom-seeking souls begin to pull back together into something cohesive -- a dream of togetherness that won't fully be realized until we all hit the playa at the end of August 2009.
Narratives include the birth and evolution of Camp dBM with Edubious, Moontroll and Grapenuts, as well as as missives from the heart of Black Rock City from Hekter in 2008. Ramona and Scotty G. join the mob with their own insights. Artists in this audio journey include Bluetech, Major Lazer, Z-Trip, Alter Echo, Erykah Badu, Kid Cudi, Beastie Boys, TV on the Radio, Nas, Herbaliser, Boxcutter, Roots Manuva, Flying Louts, Jaydiohead, Moby, Random Rab, Massive Attack, Beats Antique, Mimosa, Bassnectar, MAd Professor, Michael Jackson, The Roots, Funkadelic and Nosaj Thing.
This progressive blend of the brand-spankin' new alongside old classics represents everything I have to say about music in Black Rock City in one long-ass, delirious, whacked-out, turn-your-ears-inside-in mix. I threw everything I had left into this, my last musical melange missive before Burning Man 2009 : Evolution.
Hope to see many of you in BRC next week!
Over & out, DJ Playaduster

The Tangled Path 1 : Loose Ends

"It is interesting to contemplate a tangled bank, clothed with many plants of many kinds, with birds singing on the bushes, with various insects flitting about, and with worms crawling through the damp earth, and to reflect that these elaborately constructed forms, so different from each other, and dependent on each other in so complex a manner, have all been produced by laws acting around us...There is grandeur in this view of life, with its several powers, having been originally breathed by the Creator into a few forms or into one; and that, whilst this planet has gone cycling on according to the fixed law of gravity, from so simple a beginning endless forms most beautiful and most wonderful have been, and are being, evolved....When we look at the plants and bushes clothing an entangled bank, we are tempted to attribute their proportional numbers and kinds to what we call chance. But how false a view is this!"
--Charles Darwin, 1869
"The Tangled Path" series begins here with part one, "Loose Ends." This episode opens up with a far-flung band of Burner brothers and sisters in the days leading up to Burning Man 2008, tracking their movements towards (and away from) the playa.

Evolutionary Psychejuju

40-some days until the 2009 Burn, y'all > here's a mix from Radio DBM that is full of serious world-beat psychejuju to keep your preparations for the playa moving along on the good foot.
I was meditating on evolution while spinning out this set, particularly how species develop at different paces in different places around the planet. I love how one bird species, for example, will look and behave totally different from continent to continent, morphing form and behavior to match the physical ecosystem. But I also appreciate how all of life shares a common foundation, animated by the mysterious cosmic spark.
How does any of this apply to "Evolutionary Psychejuju"? Music is both universal as well as totally local. It begins with the heartbeat, and evolves in to a groove, a language every human can understand. I love how indigenous music is fitted to a particular place -- how the heat and aridity of Mali, the rhythm of the waves in Jamaica, the humid fecundity of Columbia have each inspired their own musical traditions. And I also love the ways in which some artists combine and blend those traditions in new and surprising ways. Musical evolution on a global scale. That's some of the thinking going on behind the scenes here at Radio dBM in the production of this here mix.

Darwin's Weird Beard

Starting to think ahead to Burning Man 2009 a bit -- can't help it. Time to start slowly crafting well-seasoned playlists of tracks that I want to bring down to the playa to share with the people. Here's a sneak peek in to some of my favorite musical goodies acquired over the past few months that are helping me to begin visualizing the next incarnation of Black Rock City. The vibe kind of swerves all over the place as lots of styles and theories are ingested in to the whole. Sources vary widely. Hope you dig it and it tickles the insides of your ears.

Heart of Flame Trilogy III : RENEWAL

Here's the final installment of the Hearts of Flame Trilogy -- a podcast tribute to Burning Man I mixed in 2006 -- hopefully posted in time for some of you playa-bound Burners to download for road trip music, perhaps even for a spin in Black Rock City some night. Back story on this podcast tribute here. Part one is here, part two is here.
Incidentally, Destination Burning Man and our many burning podcasts was noticed by the newspaper Reno Passport, and they are helping spread the word about the goodies for the gettin' here at dBM with this blog post and the comment: "Reno Passport utilized this site for our complete ipod selection for the 2008 Burn! Hit these guys up for sure!"
We're sure appreciative of the exposure -- our hits and podcasts downloaded have shot through the roof over the past few days. More than anything, DJs Playaduster and Edubious are so grateful and stoked to know more and more Burners are pulling down the music, sharing in the journey and keeping flame alit all over the world, all throughout the year!

Hearts of Flame Trilogy I : IGNITION

23 days.
In a little over three weeks, the Man will burn. Over 50,000 revelers, seekers and freaks will gather around the effigy on a remote, desolate, dry lake bed in a forgotten corner of Nevada to drum, dance with fire and lose their minds to the magic of the moment.
Though I've long decided that I won't be returning to participate in The Event in the Desert in 2008, I have to admit that with the arrival of August, Black Rock City's invisible, inevitable gravitational pull is agitating my soul. I have other projects and efforts I am dedicated to this year, namely establishing a relationship and a new home with an amazing woman and very special 7 year-old boy, but that doesn't negate my natural affinity for ritual, for community gatherings in sacred spaces, for ecstatic release, for psychedelic sojourning, for intense life-reflection and inward reorientation and for creative pranksterism.
My Burn brother Edubious and I have hatched alternative plans for the Burn weekend, and we plan on some deep-delving and freestyle soul-expression in the land above tree line in Washington's North Cascades. We'll be with all y'all, if not geographically, surely in spirit. More on that journey later...
As the days lean in closer to the gathering, I feel all kinds of emotions bubbling up, all kinds of personal needs I recognize as neglected, and an intense desire to create and share with friends. The most I can muster together for now is sharing music with the listeners dialed in to this dBM network. To that end, I'm reposting my Hearts of Flame, a Burning Man tribute-trilology in a podcast formulation.
I went through a similar process of longing in 2006 during Burn week, when I was back here in the Default World but feeling the massive energy gathering on the playa (the intensity of that longing was what ultimately led me to find a way back to the Burn in 07). Night after night in Bellingham, staring at a webcam focused on Center Camp and tuning in to the video reports from TV Free Burning Man, I wove together deeply-felt musical mixes on my Macbook. The music and the vibe were inspired by Burning Man, reflecting what I learned from my first Burn in 2004.
I set out to make a cohesive 1-hour mix, but got carried away on a wave of inspiration, and didn't wind the mix up until 4+ hours later. I had to split it up and the Hearts of Flame trilogy was born. It was a mixing session that lifted my skills to a new level -- I took what I knew about serving up music mixes and then pushed my own boundaries until I ended up with a blend that was like nothing I had heard before. It was strange and lucid and inspired and unpredictable, with massively overlaid sounds morphing in to a weird soundtrack emanating from my heart.
Listening to it today, there are all kinds of things I would do different, tracks I would like to get rid of and transitions made smoother. Yet when I hear it I am instantly transported to Black Rock City, as well as to those feelings of participating in the Burn from far away. It connects me to the primary vibe of the Burn, plugs me in and takes me away.
So, yesterday I decided that to share it here on Destination Burning Man and plan on posting one chapter of it per week from today until the Burn. (I posted it in 2006 as I was creating it on my other podcasting website, The Podcast Cafe, but have a more sympathetic audience right here.)
I hope it will inspire those of you who are busy getting ready for the journey to the Black Rock Desert right now. I send it out with the intention of connecting all of us, those who are Burn-bound and those who have chosen other routes this year. If Hearts of Flame stimulates you in any way, I'd love to hear about it: [email protected]
