I'm being serious here, and have thought about this question hard over the past week since learning of the King of Pop's passing to the other side. I've been thinking about the things I appreciate most about Burning Man -- freedom of expression, originality, devotion to creativity, genuineness, heart and soul, being brave enough to fully embody one's true self -- and feel like these qualities all came together in MJ and his music.

I felt moved to celebrate the gifts he gave to this world by making a musical mix that explores the evolution of the artist from his early career to the end. This musical journey starts with some selections from the Jackson 5, of course, before exploring Michael Jackson's early solo career, with a multifaceted look at "Off the Wall" and his original melding of disco grooves with Motown soul. Eventually, we reach "Thriller," looking at half of the album's hits from various different perspectives, before running out of time at the 79:45 mark -- just the right length to be able to burn this mix to CD. Part two, to be released in a couple of weeks, picks up with the second half of Thriller and runs through various side projects and the most intriguing sounds from his later releases.

Now, those listeners looking for a run-through of his greatest hits can, well, purchase or dig out his many "Greatest Hits" collections.... The mix is built on alternate takes, mash-ups, early home demos, interviews and, especially, remixes. There are many, many remixes of Michael floating around out there in cyberspace, and I chose a wide variety of reinterpretations: some ready to bump your booty, some corny and others just plain weird.

I reveled in the wide, creative diversity of remixes that MJ inspired, and listening to them over the past week, it dawned on me just how universal his music was -- there was an essential DNA of heart, soul and groove in just about everything he performed, and those core elements were able to be fit in and reprogramed in all kinds of musical scenarios. House, reggae, grunge, glitch, ambient -- Michael's words and voice sounded natural in so many different genres and environments, in part because it was so real. And I guess that is why he was loved the whole world over -- his gift of song was universal.

...(One other BM-MJ connection: I couldn't have made this particular mix had I not spent time smashing down arbitrary musical boundaries on the playa. My time spent in Black Rock City has greatly expanded my musical horizons and I hope that this set is reflective of that in the varied versions of his classic hits. I hope it surprises you, makes you smile and inspires the breakout of a thousand dance parties, alone or with friends.)

Michael Jackson's great success in moving so many people killed him in the end. His superstardom took over his individuality and he gave himself away to our collective desire for hero-worship, gossip and judgement. In doing so, Michael lost touch with himself and then with reality and that's when the freak show began. I try to withhold judgement for all his oddities and naivete -- I feel like society pushed him in to the corner he was trapped in and we have no right to judge him.

...Instead of getting swept up in the media frenzy of the past week -- the endless analysis of his finances and prescription drug use and relationship with his family and fate of his children -- I have turned to the music to remember.... And my full immersion in Michael's glorious art -- "I'll Be There," "Ease on Down the Road," "Don't Stop Til You Get Enough," "Billie Jean," "Smooth Criminal," "Jam" -- has reminded me that MJ was, ultimately, a bright light, brighter than most of us here on Planet Earth.... His soul was made of pure light and he came to us a bodhisattva, giving of himself to ease the suffering of humanity. "Let me fill your heart with joy and laughter," he sings, "Togetherness is all I'm after."

MJ fearlessly became one with his creative expression, merging his life with his gift, and all of us are that much better off because of it.... I might be getting carried away now, but hearing him sing the bridge in "Human Nature" makes me feel like Michael, in his heartfelt surrender to his muse, was channeling the divine spirit.

...This musical mix, to be released in two parts to keep it manageable, is my tribute to MJ and all that he gave. Like I said, it is exploratory and sometimes experimental, but hopefully reflects even just a little bit of the shine that Michael gave to the world.

Blame It On the Boogie A Tribute to Michael Jackson (Part 1) by moontrolling

Why it was never released until now is not known. It is the last musical mix concocted at the Sunnyland Soundsystem, where www.destinationburningman.com and www.podcastcafe.org were originally conceived and born. It represents an amiable clash between two imaginary alter-egos, DJ Playaduster and DJ Fundi.

Playaduster is known to be a bit crazier, a bit nastier and a lot more focused on electronica and dance music -- his specialty is getting the party from lift-off up in to orbit and Black Rock City is his natural environment. Fundi, on the other hand, is a more gentle soul and has a wider berth in the world of music -- he'll spin a jazz set, an acoustic/bluegrass set, even a set of drone music from Tibet, and is not afraid to mix some Beethoven, Beck and Beatles in the flow. He's certainly known to throw down a solid funk set -- see "Soundtrack for a Kitchen Dance Party" or "Funk Nuggets" for two fine examples -- but he tends towards the more organic style of funk.

What happens when the two of them meet and throw down at a soundsystem in its final days? Well, that is what this mix is all about. Can you guess which tracks are from Fundi and which are from Playaduster? We'll call it a Fundiduster mix if we must...

Soundstick recordings are from the "House Cooling" party thrown on Humboldt Street right before moving out.

Set list includes: Blackalicious, Missy Elliott, Erykah Badu, Gnarls Barkely, Monomo, Tortoise, Maceo Parker, Kutiman, Galactic, Ladybug Mecca, DJ Spooky, Chief Xcel, Chali 2na, M.I.A., Vibesquad, Freq Nasty, Burial, Gotan Project, Bonobo, The Beatles, Thom Yorke and Boxcutter.</itunes:summary>

Mary Anne Hobbs * "Pacific Coast Clash" * BBC Radio One

<itunes:author>Mary Anne Hobbs @ www.DestinationBurningMan.com</itunes:author><itunes:category text="music"/><itunes:keywords>mary anne hobbs, glitch mob, podcast, burning man, boreta, burning man mix, burning man podcast</itunes:keywords><itunes:subtitle>Boreta vs. Eprom vs. Dorian Concept</itunes:subtitle><itunes:summary>Mary Ann Hobbs follows up her illuminating exploration of California-based DJs, "West Coast Rocks," with this set from The Glitch Mob's Boreta vs. Eprom vs. Dorian Concept -- broadcast on BBC Radio One Experimental in May 2009. I was feeling both inspired and joyous at His Holiness' close proximity to Sunnyland Studio as well as burdened, angry and helpless as the Chinese government was arresting, torturing and murdering Tibetans in their villages and monastaries. I think this musical mix reflects the yin and yang of these two emotional poles.

Much of the music comes from the Himalayan region, and includes chanting rituals from Tibetan monks, traditional Nepalese songs, long-form Indian ragas and Chinese folk music. There is also music that I felt had an affinity to the prayer I am making with the mix, music that I was often surprised to hear how natural it blended with the unusual Himalayan vibe: a Celtic singer singing what sounds like a lament, ambient tracks from Tortoise, Cylob and Plasmalamp, medieval European choir songs and Toumani Diabate from Mali playing the kora.

Mickey Hart, DJ Cheb i Sabbah and Wayne Shorter also make appearances in this pilgrimage across the spine of Asia.

I have posted podcasts of the Dalai Lama's talks in the Northwest at www.podcastcafe.org/radiofreefundi. I wrote a story about the Dalai Lama's visit to Seattle for the Cascadia Weekly newspaper; it also discusses author Pico Iyer's new biopgraphy The Open Road: The Global Journey of the Fourteenth Dalai Lama. You can view and/or download a pdf of the story right over here. Another story I wrote about the Dalai Lama's 2004 visit to Vancouver B.C. is available here. It is a mix made up exclusively from DJ Playaduster's nocturnal field recordings -- bits and pieces of the sound environment that pulses each night on the playa, blended together, overlapped, cut-up and reassembled.

The soundscape draws its primary inspiration from the mobile soundsystem we called The DIS, which is one-half of the larger DISORIENT sound camp, an outfit of DJs all the way in from New York City. Each night, The DIS unit would slowly pull out of the inner city and head for the Open Playa, setting up dance parties in places brilliantly random and randomly brilliant.

Each night, DJ Playaduster would be drawn to The DIS and its' otherwordly grooves like a moth to flame, seeking them out on his space cruiser bike so as to infuse his soul in the DIS blend of nerf beats, electrodub, minimalist electronica and whatever else you want to call the unnameable flow of music the crew seamlessly pumped out all night. DIS photos by Rumble

In this podcast, there are several long clips from DIS DJ sets, recording on a digital soundstick and later transferred, refined and remixes on a MacBook back at Sunnyland Soundsystem. But that's not all there is here : Playaduster, in his moonlit wandering with Edubious and Hekter and Ramona, also picked up samples of Bassnectar spinning at Cirque Bezerk, assorted unnamed DJs throwing down at the Boogie Universal Pyramid, the Space Cowboys and all sorts of odd noises emitting from sound sculptures, steam treehouses and various vortexes of the night.

DJ Playaduster gathered this wide array of digital sound clips and has attempted to mix them in to some sort of seamless reimagined recreation of Black Rock City after dark. The sound quality is not the best you'll ever hear, but if it lacks in sonic fidelity, it excels in bringing the spirit of the playa back home to the Default World.

If you've never been to Black Rock City before, this mix will be quite unlike anything you've heard before. You may believe that you've stumbled on to another planet. If you are a dusty veteran of The Event in the Desert, then hopefully this dBM podcast will inspire flashbacks, huge goofy smiles and spontaneous dance parties.

DJ Playaduster would LOVE to hear your reaction to this mix. One interesting tidbit about the name of the mix that I like is that is has spiritual and literal context behind the name. In preparing myself and the band for burningman (preparation is a road in itself), I had spent alot of time in ableton writing music/concepts for our future creative expressions on playa. This mix contains two of my remixes that were spawned off of this creative process. So in a sense, this mix CD and the band performances at burningman fulfilled my desire to participate by bringing art in the form of music to burningman.

The second literal meaning of the name of the mix, is the fact that the mix was actually performed in an RV as me and a good friend of mine drove to burningman from the SF bay area. I did the mix in Ableton live on a macbookpro with a m-audio trigger finger on my lap. All of the bumps in the road made mixing all the more challenging ;)

Most of the CD's that I handed out at burningman were burned while we waited almost 3 hours to get through the gate. If you are a regular listener to my podcast, you will definitely hear the influence of the playa soundscape in this mix.

This mix includes the sounds of Bassnectar, The Glitch Mob, Karsh Kale, Sayr, Up, Bustle, & Out, a fresh remix of Bob Marley, Boswick Gates, and Jamiroquai. I have just begun to explore the world of breaks and IDM, so you will probably hear more of these sounds in future mixes. Field recordings from the Playa were captured by DJ Playaduster, who is working out his own musical response to our experience in the desert.

To Hekter, Ramona Mayhem, Torsten, Hendy and moontroll: much respect for their creative contributions to this mix and my playa experience!

I'd love to know you're out there and listening, so holla if you hear me! edubious@mac.com.

Episode 2 jumps ahead six months and we find Johnny barreling across the state of Washington, from his outpost in the Inland Empire towards the danky northwest corner of the coastal realm. Once mossily ensconsed, and with freshly-scoured chapstraps, JB joins forces with Trail Rat and Fundi. Soon, the band of merry makers head out for Whitehorn Point on a reconnaisance mission. They are strapped to varying degrees and prepared for orgiastic clamjuice to penetrate their inner toe-sacs as they browse the primordial salad bar on the salty edge. Their "foggy arts colloquiam" ends with an order of some NOjitos at a seaside bar, and then they flee for the cozy safety of Lummi Island.

Once safely ensconsed in the woods where Sasquatches are known to lurk, the men drank Schmidt and frolicked on the gravel banks of the Nooksack. The campfire was central, and the glow sticks were a pleasing diversion. They were visited in the night by a French pirate-chef, but no earwigs penetrated their inner sanctum. Just before the first light of a new day, an ancient salmon dance was invoked...

These Men of the Nooksack all hope to get to Black Rock City, home of Burning Man, this summer, and they hope to unleash the Pacific Northwest energy. They dream of bringing fresh beats and ice-col' Schmidties to the playa. You can help them share the Nooksack Vibrations by pledging your financial support to their mission.

Well, it has been noted more than once that the three of us are gifted by way of our musical tastes, not to mention our obsessive collections of music both analog and digital, so we got to thinking: there is plenty of techno down at Burning Man -- why don't we offer up vibes of a different flavor?

One of our best hopes then is to dream up, then build, a portable sound system that is capable of moving across the playa pumping out our most adventurous musical offerings as an alternative to the ever-present pulse of rave music. We want to bring the funk. We want to lay down the reggae dub. We want to spin the jazz, the world beat, the cajun and the calypso. Two of our alter egos, DJ Fundi and DJ Edubious, have much experience in crafting musical podcast mixes, and we used to host a jazz/groove radio show out in Wyoming (of all places), and we believe we can put both our experience and our vast archives to good use.

So, we're moving forward on the assembly of musical mixes, and here is the very first test run available for your listening pleasure. Just click on the button below and enjoy...
