Beautiful World

dBMcast #116: Beautiful World
Mixed by
Kaya Rainface, November 2012

Music by The Polish Ambassador * Stephan Jacobs * Gladkill * Emancipator * Sugarpill * Michael Meneirt * SBTRKT * Paper Diamond * Russ Liquid * Andreilien * JoBOT * Bassnectar.

"Its a beautiful world we're livin' in…"

With this simple phrase repeated over and over like a mantra on the title track from Stephan Jacob's new album, DJ Kaya Rainface heard the possibility of a new mix celebrating the ephemeral glory of being alive on Planet Earth here at the end of the Mayan calendar.

"What happens after 12/21/12? Nobody knows! Will our world look different the next morning? Or will the changes all take place inside of us?" Rainface wondered in a recent conversation over steamy oolong tea. "Whatever goes down, 12/21/12 provides all of us a centering of attention, a cosmic quickening, and a chance to refocus our intention. I felt the call to create a mix that celebrated how fortunate we all are to be here, in this place, at this time. Beautiful world for sure!"

Elements that hold this musical journey together include 1.) heavy participation from the
Headtron crew in California, including Sugarpill, Gladkill, Andreilien, Stephan Jacobs, Russ Liquid and JoBOT, 2.) an exploration of tracks that use the human voice in interesting ways: looping, mutating, glitching out, bending and folding and chopping singers' voices until they are barely recognizable as human, becoming instruments instead, disembodied androids offering fractured vespers, and 3.) an interconnected mosaic of midtempo tracks that marry intergalactic space travel, melodic beauty and deep, nutrient-rich bass whompage.

The Beautiful World Choir includes voices from Sade, Jay-Z, Yukimi Nagano, Linval Thompson and the glorious wispy vocals of Thao Nguyen on Emancipator's track "When I Go," which is presented here in a mashup of the original with the Michael Menert remix.

"The Headtron tribe is putting out some of the most interesting bass music happening today. They are way out there on the leading edge of electronic music, creating pretty, emotional music that also slays you with bass" Rainface mused, "I love how they are each distinct artists yet sharing a common aesthetic in making music. Putting them together in a mix made it really easy for me to keep the flow moving forward. It developed very organically. The mix knew what it wanted to be and I just helped facilitate its manifestation!"

Interdimensional Lounge Music

Mixed by DJ Playaduster, September 2012 -- first dBMcast post-Burning Man 2012!

Well, that was a BIG FUN TIME!

Yes yes yes Burning Man 2012 served us right and now we're back home in the Default World, dusting off, processing all the brilliant stimuli we saw tasted heard and felt, and trying to bring the best of it all back to our lives and relationships and work here at our "other home." I was extremely pleased with the amount of art on the playa this year -- major installations, interactive light and sound contraptions, quiet remote pieces in Deep Playa -- and boogied my ass off most nights at dance parties both enormously over-the-top and tiny family-style. I received a walloping whomping dose of
Bass Chakra Therapy from Fractal Nation, Robot Heart, False Prophet, Buddha Lounge, Bass Camp & others, and lately have been seeking mellower sounds that act as a healing balm to blown-out mind and soul.

This new mix is mostly downtempo, smooth, bubbling, spacey, warm and user-friendly. I am inspired by the sounds I heard at various lounge/chill parties where the music was soothing yet psychedelic, low-key but intriguing, somehow existing both in the background and foreground at the same time. The title is borrowed from a track featured here by
The Polish Ambassador and the artwork/photographs are of my favorite interdimensional lounge of 2012: Star Seed by artist Kate Raudenbush.

Interdimensional Lounge Music features tunes by Sugarpill * The Polish Ambassador * Kalya Scintilla * Tipper * Bonobo * Pretty Lights * Nicholas Jaar * The xx * Emancipator * Thriftworks * Andreilien * & Gladkill.

Desert Dreamers : An Indo-African Alchemy Dub Experience

Mixed by DJ Playaduster & Kaya Rainface in July 2012
and shared with humility in "earthy family style."

Prepare yourself for an intergalactic soundwave excursion to the Indian subcontinent and choice African destinations with DJs Playaduster and Kaya Rainface. Originally inspired by my discovery of the amazing Desert Dwellers remix project and the new Dirtwire project from Beats Antique, this musical journey invokes caravans in the desert, mystical night wanderings, starlight, throngs of pilgrims seeking visions on the playa, uttered prayers and whispered secrets, meditation, tribal gatherings, tea ceremonies, transcendent dancing, spices and scents. With plenty of earthy bass tones to ground our seekings, the mix floats towards the heavens on the wings of sitar, violin, cello, tabla, kamel ngoini and voice.

Featuring Desert Dwellers * Drumspyder * Filastine * Cheb i Sabbah * Bassnectar * Dirtwire * Kaminanda * Miles Davis * Kurt Rosenwinkel * Seun Kuti * Four Tet * Tinariwen * Issa Bagayoyo * Adham Shaikh * Eastern Sun * The Beatles * Yo- Yo Ma * Random Rab * Kalya Scintilla * Beats Antique * Nicolas Jaar * Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan * Massive Attack * Bobby McFerrin * Sacred System * TJ Rehmi * Mari Boine * Future Prophecies.

Rites of Passage: Pathways to the Portal

What does the theme Rites of Passage mean to you? Is Burning Man just a big party in the desert? These questions spark the insights and musings of Get Found 3.0 campers as we envision it, manifest it, build it, paint it, pimp it out, feel it, struggle with it, open to it, let go of it and offer it as a gift to all.

The soundtrack for this lucid stream of consciousness is a mid-to-downtempo mix of music from Mimosa, Bassnectar, Eliot Lipp, Burial, Thievery Corporation, Tipper, Pretty Lights, Marty Party, Ooah, Emancipator, Jamie Woon, Russ Liquid Sound and Tycho.

We will pass through the Portal in 6 days! We invite our fellow Burners who will be on the playa this year to visit us at 8-8:30 & G-H (approximately…look for our blue and green parachutes, teacup signs on the street corner, or check in at Playa Info) for a cup of tea at the Get Found SyncroniciTEA House & Ju Ju Parlor! You know we'll be playing good music. See you at Home.
