Electrickery

135-Elektrickery

dBMcast #135: Electrickery
Mixed by DJ Playdusterat the Purple Palace, August 2013

A journey through audiolicious textures and grooves, Electrickery is an easy-flowin' ramble through some of the more ear-tickling tunes from some of our favorite producers: Four Tet, SaQi, Mount Kimbie, Odessza, Bonobo, Nico Jaar and Jon Hopkins. These DJs are in a class of their own, next level sound manipulators with a deep, unfailing sense of rhythm and pulse. The highlight of the mix may be the Russ Liquid tryptic, where we take three of his recent Soundcloud singles and blend them in to a melange of dub, disembodied voices, floating trumpet, broken beats and what sound like audio samples gathered at the edge of the known universe.

Though not quite as lulling and soft as Dreamstep, Electrickery is a soundtrack for daydreaming. Enjoy the ride and let us know where it takes you! Photo by Neil Girling.

Track list: Saqi "No Hay Bando" / Gramatik "You Don't Understand" / ODESZA "I Want You > How Did I Get Here?" / Little People "Electrickery" / Bonobo "First Fires" / Nicolas Jaar "Russian Dolls > Materials" / Mount Kimbie "Fall Out > So Many" / Saqi "Saturn > Quest's End" / Russ Liquid "Butterfly > Baby Cubed > Singing" / Four Tet "Pyramid" / Jon Hopkins "Sun Harmonics > Abandon Window" / ODESZA "iPlayUListen" \\ fini

Aequinoctium

Aequinoctium2
dBMcast #133 : Aequinoctium
Mixed by DJ Playduster, Purple Palace, June-Sept 2013

Our latest addition to the dBMcast canon is an interesting sound project that we have been building and tinkering with for four months, off and on as the wandering focus allows. Instead of our usual fare of
whomp, sacred bass, funky disco breaks, glitch-hop, Headtron and other forms of Bass Chakra Therapy, Aequinoctium is a more quiet, introspective journey, full of abstract sidetrips but always adhering to a barely-perceptible pulse that runs through it all. We release it here at the autumnal equinox, a period when we begin to leave behind the excesses of summer and turn towards the inward, the quietude, that which will ground us after a season of soul-spinning flow of travel, festivals, friends, music, outdoor adventures, long days and raucous nights.

For me, the hinge of the seasons is a perfect time to ease the ride back down to Planet Earth, collect and sort our dusty mementos and tattered scraps, and begin to process, to alchemize, what we have gathered over the recent months: starlight, new friends, fire, subwoofers, camp food, eye contact & hugs, downward dogs, climbable art, swims, PBRs & IPAs, legal herb, hot springs, visionary stages & inspired domes, tutus, trails, third eye downloads, full moons, kisses, whispered spells and secret messages and sacred symbols……
sift it. What's left behind has a place in the mandala of your summer, and it's crucial to take the time to try and make some sense of it all, sifting out the nuggets of inspiration and wisdom that could prove to be crucial towards your next steps down the path.

So, yeah, the music in this mix is designed to induce these states of re-grounding, decoding, processing, finding your renewed alignment for the coming months….. the groove continually falls apart and then comes back together, degrading and reconstituting, drifting in and out of your attention field, working its abstract magic on you in the background channels.

The 2013 release of a live
Four Tet performance from Copenhagen on 3/30/04 serves as the initial inspiration for both the sounds and the aesthetic of Aequinoctium. Without putting too many preconceptions in your head, DJ Playaduster goes deep in search of soundscapes that are abstract and slightly broken, shambly, glitched and interpolatinging alien transmissions amongst lush melodic beauty. The voices rarely come together in speech, yet there are many people you will meet along the way, many places you'll visit for too-short a stay. The groove will not abandon you, don't worry!

With Four Tet setting these tone and serving as the lodestone, other producers fall comfortably in to place with the vibe: Mount Kimbie, James Blake, DJ Koze, Clark, Brain Eno, Nicholas Jaar, Ezekiel Honig, Jon Hopkins and others. Of Four Tet's live
Copenhagen release, Pitchfork writes that "Four Tet showed a new generation of listeners that much like 60s jazz before him-- which could embody soul, gospel, blues and primal howls while still sounding like “The New Thing”-- 21st century laptop music could be as serious as your life, too."

Hope you enjoy listening to it, hope it takes you to places far away, and brings you back ready to face what's next with confidence & a love-filled heart.

Temple Twilight > Moonjuice Dub

124-templetwilight
dBMcast #124: Temple Twilight > Moonjuice Dub
Mixed by Kaya Rainface + DJ Playaduster from 4th Corner Soundsystems, December 2012

Kaya Rainface starts this playa journey with a 30+ minute mediation on transitionary periods on the playa, not-this and not-that, like twilight out at the Temple. A mediation on Sacred Bass ensues as we slowly lift off from Planet Earth.

Rainface and Playaduster join forces around minute 34 and intertwine their bass DNA to co-create some deep
bass chakra healing vibrations.

At minute 48, Playaduster steps in to usher in the nighttime wih a propulsive set of headtronic glitch and dust-raising whompstep.

At 1 hour and 10 minutes, they reconvene to bring the journey back home, and tuck it in safely to slumber…..

Another installment in the celebrated Whomp Massive series--inspired low-end collages for your personal Bass Chakra Therapy practice. This one starts slow and languid, taking its time before Nico Luminous starts getting rowdy with "Swamp Gate" and we achieve Whomp Massive lift-off at precisely minute 17:46. The rest is bass gravy……

Tracklist:
Gladkill "Distance > Don't Say No"
sAuce + SIMPLETON + Dub.Buddha "Sleepytime "
Nicoluminous "Swamp Gate"
GRiZ "Vision of Happiness"
ChrisB. "Tripping in the Key of Balls"

Mus Sik "Eternal Smile"
Kaminanda "Time Travellers"
ChrisB. "Eye in the Sky > Triangular Objects"
Gramatik "Bluestep"
Michael Menert "Eventide" (edit)

ps. one of my most vivid, blissful memories of Burning Man 2012 was swinging freely on an oversized swing set behind the DJ stand at False Prophet's annual Tuesday Night party on the Esplanade. The sense of weightlessness, the backdrop of innumerable stars against the inky black eternity of sky, the empathic bass and blinky lights and love and dust….After the Polish Ambassador's playa debut, ChrisB took the party to the next level with his confident bass-slinging of daring low-end frequencies to a very supportive crowd of movers & groovers…..perfect!

DJ Playaduster & DJ Fundi, October-November 2012

Evolutionista's Nightlife Set 1

My friend Torsten, who originally convinced me to go to Burning Man in 2004, lives in San Francisco and always has the inside track on good DJ music. He recently turned me on to this 2-part live set from a Bay Area DJ named Evolutionista. Don’t know much about him but this brief bio, from his website:

“Evolutionista is the design and music moniker of independent Oakland artist Griffin Crafts. As Evolutionista, Crafts delves into downtempo blending ambient curiosities with beat-centric sensibilities. Fusing a command of technology with passionate devotion to art, Evolutionista hopes to invite and ensure healthy evolution for all beings.”

I love these spacey sounds and listen to this mix often when I’m looking for soothing, inspiring sounds. Enjoy.

Grace in Bass

Cleaning out the vaults of 2010 to make space for new freshness in 2011, I came across this neglected mix that hadn't been posted yet. Deep in the wintertime of 2010, working through some personal struggles in my isolated zendo on an island in Washington State, I began exploring a new system of healing: Bass Chakra Therapy. Subwoofers or high-quality headphones are required; intoxicants optional but recommended.

"Grace in Bass" is the cosmic cousin of "
Subsonic Sonata," a mix released last May. I mixed both from a common playlist that gathered together tracks that exemplified the healing qualities of bass in its many mysterious and mystical forms. Both mixes have a meditative quality to them and bass elements that are thick, sinuous, mostly gentle, inquisitive and with unique bass chakra massaging qualities.

Artists includes Timonkey * Heyoka * Vibesquad * Boxcutter * Mike Monday * Shackleton * Zero 7 * Luke Vibbert * Rusko * Clubroot * Four Tet * Ooah * Nosaj Thing * The Field. Artwork by Android Jones.

"Grace in Bass" and "Subsonic Sonata" both got me through some really dark, isolated days of winter. I hope they do some good work for you too.

Subsonic Sonata

This one's dedicated to the devastating beat creator......

How does this latest mix from DJ Playaduster fit in with his recently-unleashed
Bass Chakra Therapy / Wobble Chronicles series?

It is still unclear how this particularly tasty blend of bass-positive music fits in with
alla that chakra therapy bidness and we are open to theorizing from dedicated listeners. But this much we know: there is still the continuity of serious down-low subwoofer-friendly basshead music mixed into a flowing river of soulful low-end revelry. One difference is that this poem is less dependent on Whomp and Glitch and other Left Coast bass-hop tomfoolery.

Instead, it moves across varying landscapes of moody, swirling, dense grooves and emotions. BASS is the only constant, the liturgy speaking to the recesses of your primal animal soul.

Subsonic Sonata features Luke Vibert / Shackleton / Fever Ray / Bluetech / Nosaj Thing / Boxcutter / Zomby / Rustie / Matt Shadetek / Mimosa / Noah D. Roomate / Roots Manuva / Coldcut / Hedfunk / Four Tet / Burial / Ana Sia / ill.Gates / Heyoka / Bassnectar / Tipper and / The Field \\.
