Bass Harvest: Fresh Frequencies for Fall

134-Bass-Harvest

dBMcast #134 : Bass Harvest: Fresh Frequencies for Fall
DJ Playaduster Live from the Purple Palace, 10/3/13

Here's a hot-off-the-griddle dBMcast that blends together many of today's finest, fattest, freshest forward-leanin' tracks from the purveyors of Bass Love. These cuts are the latest of the latest, wildharvested hither & thither here at the end of summer by DJ Playaduster. He's able to tour the listener through a wide range of cutting-edge low-end whomp in a short span of time, his sonic processing skills honed by extensive Bass Chakra Therapy practice at transformational festivals around the Pacific Northwest this summer. The Symbiosis Gathering, in particular, expanded his musical horizons and inspired him to dig deeper in his ongoing bass investigations, and several of the performers he caught on lakeside stages over that weekend have worked their way in to the fabric of this exploration.

track list // James Blake "Holy Ghost" intro.... / saQi + The Polish Ambassador "Jarro" / Ott "Baby Robot" / Random Rab "Release"/ Sidecar Tommy "Vortex" / JUPIT3R "1226" / GRiZ "Heartbeat" / Phaeleh "Make You Feel" / ODESZA "Keep Her Close" / Break Science "Now You Want More"/ James Blake "Life Round Here" (saQi remix) / Laura Mvula "She" (Shlomo remix) / Claude VonStroke "The Bridge" / Nico Luminous "When I See You Shine"/ Blackstreet "No Diggety" (TPA remix) / Wildlight "Live Inside a Dream" (saQi remix) / saQi "Your Last Breath" / ODESZA "If There's Time" / Nightmares on Wax "Om Sweet H(Om)e / Shpongle "Tickling the Amygdala" / Timonkey "Sooner or Later" \\

This summer we tried something different and passed on Burning Man in exchange for a variety of different transformational festivals / electromusikfests / tribal bass gatherings in Washington and Oregon, choosing to disperse our time, attention and resources over several different fests instead of the Grandaddy of them all. The results were extremely positive, which sets up a hard decision that will need to be made sometime next year when scoping the next summer. This mix represents some of what we learned out there in the woods: the music we absorbed, dancefloor community we joined, freedom we cultivated and bliss we tasted.

Our Deep Listening, usually under enhanced circumstances, of artists like Grammatik, Russ Liquid, Pumpkin, Plantrae, Shpongle, Kalya Scintilla, Odesza, STS9, The Polish Ambassador, Emancipator, Sun:Monx, Dirtwire, Thriftworks, Freq Nasty, saQi, Phaeleh, Lotus, Sidecar Tommy, Jupit3r, Sugarpill, An-ten-ae — all in the space of a few moons, many for the first time ever — it really took our understanding and appreciation of Bass Chakra Therapy to a richer place, more free, more flowing, more abstract and psychedelic yet rooted down than ever before.

Huge gratitude to the Dream Dome on the edge of the Pacific Ocean at Photosynthesis, the upper "Clamshell" with a wicked Mt. Hood view at What the Festival?!, the late-night tent at Summer Meltdown next to the wild river and glacial-clad peaks and, with an extra-deep bow, all places at all times for Symbiosis Gathering. I learned so much from you and will continue to work on incorporating the best parts in to my day-to-day tenure on Planet Earth. To all the beautiful peoples from all over the world I met around campfires, on the beach, in front of the subwoofers, stage left, stage right, in the woods or on the road: Namaste.
The light inside me recognizes the light inside you. Dance on!

Aequinoctium

Aequinoctium2
dBMcast #133 : Aequinoctium
Mixed by DJ Playduster, Purple Palace, June-Sept 2013

Our latest addition to the dBMcast canon is an interesting sound project that we have been building and tinkering with for four months, off and on as the wandering focus allows. Instead of our usual fare of
whomp, sacred bass, funky disco breaks, glitch-hop, Headtron and other forms of Bass Chakra Therapy, Aequinoctium is a more quiet, introspective journey, full of abstract sidetrips but always adhering to a barely-perceptible pulse that runs through it all. We release it here at the autumnal equinox, a period when we begin to leave behind the excesses of summer and turn towards the inward, the quietude, that which will ground us after a season of soul-spinning flow of travel, festivals, friends, music, outdoor adventures, long days and raucous nights.

For me, the hinge of the seasons is a perfect time to ease the ride back down to Planet Earth, collect and sort our dusty mementos and tattered scraps, and begin to process, to alchemize, what we have gathered over the recent months: starlight, new friends, fire, subwoofers, camp food, eye contact & hugs, downward dogs, climbable art, swims, PBRs & IPAs, legal herb, hot springs, visionary stages & inspired domes, tutus, trails, third eye downloads, full moons, kisses, whispered spells and secret messages and sacred symbols……
sift it. What's left behind has a place in the mandala of your summer, and it's crucial to take the time to try and make some sense of it all, sifting out the nuggets of inspiration and wisdom that could prove to be crucial towards your next steps down the path.

So, yeah, the music in this mix is designed to induce these states of re-grounding, decoding, processing, finding your renewed alignment for the coming months….. the groove continually falls apart and then comes back together, degrading and reconstituting, drifting in and out of your attention field, working its abstract magic on you in the background channels.

The 2013 release of a live
Four Tet performance from Copenhagen on 3/30/04 serves as the initial inspiration for both the sounds and the aesthetic of Aequinoctium. Without putting too many preconceptions in your head, DJ Playaduster goes deep in search of soundscapes that are abstract and slightly broken, shambly, glitched and interpolatinging alien transmissions amongst lush melodic beauty. The voices rarely come together in speech, yet there are many people you will meet along the way, many places you'll visit for too-short a stay. The groove will not abandon you, don't worry!

With Four Tet setting these tone and serving as the lodestone, other producers fall comfortably in to place with the vibe: Mount Kimbie, James Blake, DJ Koze, Clark, Brain Eno, Nicholas Jaar, Ezekiel Honig, Jon Hopkins and others. Of Four Tet's live
Copenhagen release, Pitchfork writes that "Four Tet showed a new generation of listeners that much like 60s jazz before him-- which could embody soul, gospel, blues and primal howls while still sounding like “The New Thing”-- 21st century laptop music could be as serious as your life, too."

Hope you enjoy listening to it, hope it takes you to places far away, and brings you back ready to face what's next with confidence & a love-filled heart.

Photosynthesis : Into the Dream Dome

photosynthesis-dreamdome

dBMcast#129: Photosynthesis : Into the Dream Dome
Mixed by Kaya Rainface, August 2013

Here's some Jedi Goddess Ninja Healer Mermaid Wizard music, inspired by the Photosynthesis Festival held at Hobuck Beach in the far northwestern corner of Washington State July 19-21, 2013 and mixed up by Kaya Rainface for Destination Burning Man. This set evokes the sacred bass celebrations held in the Dream Dome, tapping in to dream states, dream flights, subconscious massages & third eye galaktivations, a space where fantasies morph in to altered realities….let this musical sacrament take you to the places where you access your subliminal sides & express your secret powers!

Jon Hopkins "Sun Harmonics"
Subaqueous "Invoking"
Kaminanda "Liquid Sunrise"
Plantrae "Taiga Bloom"
Drumpyder remixes "Shiva Ntaraj > Bodhi Mandala" (Desert Dwellers)
Aligning Minds "In the Wake of Forever"
Osiris "Immersion > Sole Diver"
Kalpatura Tree "Naked Soul Dub"
Kalya Scintilla "From Day to Night and Back Again"
Elephant Revival "The Raven Song"
Russ Liquid "New Beginnings"

Photosynthesis began with a ritual. An elder from the Makah tribe—we were holding our gathering on their tribal lands, at their invitation—said prayers in his native tongue and then blessed the ground we would dance upon all weekend by sprinkling white puffs of eagle down from his medicine bag. It was an offering that galaktivated the Dream Dome. The line-up of DJs—combined with the visionary artists, VJs, tea servers, dancers and many wild, organic shrines—created a deep vibe that persisted over three long nights of ritual and dancing. The swollen moon waxed in the heavens above, ravens and eagles flew overhead and the hypnotic roar of the Pacific Ocean backdropped everything.

Photosyn-3
Plantrae playing violin and dropping botanical beats in the Dream Dome

In this mix, Jon Hopkins gives the opening invocation with "Sun Harmonics," appropriate for Photosynthesizers beneath a grey blanket of sea fog and salty mist. The rest of the artists contribute to the musical journey in more or less the order they performed in the Dream Dome over the weekend: amazing contributions from (mostly) West Coast/Pacific Northwest producers Subaqueous, Kaminanda, Plantrae, Drumspyder, Aligning Minds, Osiris, Kalpatura Tree and Kalya Scintilla. Elephant Revival shares a closing prayer with "Raven Song" and, as we drift off from the Dream Dome at dawn, the sounds of Russ Liquid coming from the Mandala Dome carry us home to our tents in the trees….

I should note that Hopkins and Elephant Revival did not play at Photosynthesis, but their opening and closing mantras to the mix are in alignment with the Dream Dome vibe and we're happy to have them!

Photosyn-6
Visionary art in the Dream Dome

The vocals are Makah elders speaking in their indigenous language, including a whaling chant. They are incorporated in Kaya Rainface's mix in the spirit of respect for their culture and gratitude for letting us gather to dance, celebrate, commune and heal on their ancestral land. You'll also hear elements of the land: waves crashing, birds calling, winds blowing…it was an overcast and somewhat chilly weekend, though we were spared rain, and the chill brought us closer together around campfires.

Photosyn-7
Kalya Scintilla closes the weekend ritual Sunday night in the Dream Dome

Gratitude. We are grateful to the DJs, artists, dancers, temple builders and festival organizers. See you back at Hobuck next year!

Subterranean Homesick Blues : Dreamstep II

121-subterranean
Mixed by DJ Playaduster, December 2012

A strange and slightly unsettling journey through bass & space music past and present, intuitively guided by DJ Playaduster in the dark heart of winter. This is a weird one, folks, where Playaduster followed the muse wherever she wandered, accepting her guidance and translating the cosmic downloads in to beats, bass and sideways swerves. Not for casual listening, but rewarding if you want to buy the ticket and take the ride!

Threshold (Open Me Slowly)

117-threshold

Mixed by DJ Playaduster, December 2012

Here's one more dBMcast for 2012 and the first to actually feature some of the soundstick recordings captured at Burning Man 2012. dBMcast #117 features Moontroll of Get Found reporting from the road to Gerlach, and from the exciting moment when one's vehicles leaves pavement and hits the playa, and from the line to get in to the city when a whiteout dust storm stopped all movement. Moontroll is geared towards that once-a-year passage through the Portal to the other side, and his excitement is palpable. Ride shotgun with him as he approaches the Threshold to another world of magic and mystery, a journey with an undulating soundtrack of forward-leaning bass music that touches on electroboogie, dubstep, ambient, world beat, breaks and other styles.

As this mix is about thresholds, portals, journeys and crossings, you'll also hear contributions from Terrence McKenna speaking on UFOs and spirit molecules and a science report on recent NASA searches for elusive portals that spontaneously open and close in the Earth's magnetosphere.

Track list:
Break Science "Forest of Illumination"
Elliott Lipp "The Sunset"
Michael Menert "Take All You Want"
Kaminanda "
The Portal"
Sugarpill "Bring It Back"
eDIT "Mildew"
Rena Jones "
Open Me Slowly"
Beats Antique "Hero"
Nicholas Jaar "Colomb"

Beautiful World

dBMcast #116: Beautiful World
Mixed by
Kaya Rainface, November 2012

Music by The Polish Ambassador * Stephan Jacobs * Gladkill * Emancipator * Sugarpill * Michael Meneirt * SBTRKT * Paper Diamond * Russ Liquid * Andreilien * JoBOT * Bassnectar.

"Its a beautiful world we're livin' in…"

With this simple phrase repeated over and over like a mantra on the title track from Stephan Jacob's new album, DJ Kaya Rainface heard the possibility of a new mix celebrating the ephemeral glory of being alive on Planet Earth here at the end of the Mayan calendar.

"What happens after 12/21/12? Nobody knows! Will our world look different the next morning? Or will the changes all take place inside of us?" Rainface wondered in a recent conversation over steamy oolong tea. "Whatever goes down, 12/21/12 provides all of us a centering of attention, a cosmic quickening, and a chance to refocus our intention. I felt the call to create a mix that celebrated how fortunate we all are to be here, in this place, at this time. Beautiful world for sure!"

Elements that hold this musical journey together include 1.) heavy participation from the
Headtron crew in California, including Sugarpill, Gladkill, Andreilien, Stephan Jacobs, Russ Liquid and JoBOT, 2.) an exploration of tracks that use the human voice in interesting ways: looping, mutating, glitching out, bending and folding and chopping singers' voices until they are barely recognizable as human, becoming instruments instead, disembodied androids offering fractured vespers, and 3.) an interconnected mosaic of midtempo tracks that marry intergalactic space travel, melodic beauty and deep, nutrient-rich bass whompage.

The Beautiful World Choir includes voices from Sade, Jay-Z, Yukimi Nagano, Linval Thompson and the glorious wispy vocals of Thao Nguyen on Emancipator's track "When I Go," which is presented here in a mashup of the original with the Michael Menert remix.

"The Headtron tribe is putting out some of the most interesting bass music happening today. They are way out there on the leading edge of electronic music, creating pretty, emotional music that also slays you with bass" Rainface mused, "I love how they are each distinct artists yet sharing a common aesthetic in making music. Putting them together in a mix made it really easy for me to keep the flow moving forward. It developed very organically. The mix knew what it wanted to be and I just helped facilitate its manifestation!"

Interdimensional Lounge Music

Mixed by DJ Playaduster, September 2012 -- first dBMcast post-Burning Man 2012!

Well, that was a BIG FUN TIME!

Yes yes yes Burning Man 2012 served us right and now we're back home in the Default World, dusting off, processing all the brilliant stimuli we saw tasted heard and felt, and trying to bring the best of it all back to our lives and relationships and work here at our "other home." I was extremely pleased with the amount of art on the playa this year -- major installations, interactive light and sound contraptions, quiet remote pieces in Deep Playa -- and boogied my ass off most nights at dance parties both enormously over-the-top and tiny family-style. I received a walloping whomping dose of
Bass Chakra Therapy from Fractal Nation, Robot Heart, False Prophet, Buddha Lounge, Bass Camp & others, and lately have been seeking mellower sounds that act as a healing balm to blown-out mind and soul.

This new mix is mostly downtempo, smooth, bubbling, spacey, warm and user-friendly. I am inspired by the sounds I heard at various lounge/chill parties where the music was soothing yet psychedelic, low-key but intriguing, somehow existing both in the background and foreground at the same time. The title is borrowed from a track featured here by
The Polish Ambassador and the artwork/photographs are of my favorite interdimensional lounge of 2012: Star Seed by artist Kate Raudenbush.

Interdimensional Lounge Music features tunes by Sugarpill * The Polish Ambassador * Kalya Scintilla * Tipper * Bonobo * Pretty Lights * Nicholas Jaar * The xx * Emancipator * Thriftworks * Andreilien * & Gladkill.

Shimmer : Dreamstep for Dubheads

dBMcast #107: Shimmer : Dreamstep for Dubheads
Mixed by DJ Playaduster May-June 2012

With dBMcast #107, DJ Playaduster has woven a sonic tapestry designed to induce dream states and facilitate astral projections. With rumbling bass as our Earthly grounding, we float past nebuli, vortexes and voyaging spacecraft on the wings of violin, percussion, guitar, trumpet and more. If you listen closely, you'll hear Moontroll & Orbit encountering the Temple for the first time at Burning Man 2010.

Have a look around. Smell the colors. Feel the low-end textures massage the tender places in your Bass Chakra. Taste the salty stardust. Relax. Let go….There are no sharp edges or rough transitions here, so you can close your eyes, lay back and take the ride with full trust in the interstellar navigational skills of DJ Playaduster.

Ready, Set, Get Found!

Welcome to the days leading up t0 Burning Man 2011, when Camp Get Found was visualizing their return to the playa and manifesting the SynchroniciTEA House & JuJu Parlor. In this mix, you'll find the freshest bass biscuits available from the most visionary DJs currently manipulating sounds for the benefit of Bass Chakra Therapy, combined with vocal samples taken in Seattle, Bellingham and on the road to Black Rock City. The Larry Harvey Dub Experience

Here’s a new mix from DJ Playaduster, with special guest Larry Harvey, founding visionary of Burning Man. The audio is from a recent talk he gave in San Francisco at the Burning Man Regional Convectional Caucus that was recorded and broadcast by Shouting Fire. He is pontificating on the early roots of Burning Man, some of the principles Burners adhere to, and ways in which the Black Rock City culture is spreading out in to the default world in surprising ways.

The music is a mix of style from whomp to dubstep, glitch to jazz. Many of the tracks are taken from the Ninja Tune XX compilation. Hopefully this soundscape presents many of the tempos and feelings one would get wandering around Black Rock City at night.

Featuring Amon Tobin (King Cannibal remix) * Andreya Triani (Mala remix) * Bonobo (Floating Points remix) * Anti-Pop Consortium (Four Tet remix) * Thom Yorke + Four Tet + Burial * Wolf + Lamb * The Bug * Coldcut * "White Rabbit" dubstep remix * R/D * MiMosa * Pretty Lights * Vibesquad * Eskmo (Lorn remix) * Burial * Radiohead * Dorian Concept * Jazz Jagist (Grasscut remix)

Eskmo's MiniMix for Radio4 Graz

A new, lovely, spacey, superchill mix from the uber-talented DJ Eskmo. He writes:
“The first European show of my EU tour this June was in Graz Austria (Pics below) for the Springfestival. I played alongside Dorian Concept, Martyn and Samiyam on Thursday and ended up staying an extra day on Friday. That extra night the good people over at FM4 asked me to come in and do a short interview and dj set. It seemed like most of the other djs coming into the studio were playing more danc-y type sets. So, given the gentle mist of rain outside, the proximity to rolling hills and a massive river, I figured I would go a more gentle route. (I admit this mix is more of something my alter ego “Welder” would put out, but the world is a weird place, you never know what can happen.) Here is the simple gentle set. Enjoy.”

Evolutionista's Nightlife Set 1

My friend Torsten, who originally convinced me to go to Burning Man in 2004, lives in San Francisco and always has the inside track on good DJ music. He recently turned me on to this 2-part live set from a Bay Area DJ named Evolutionista. Don’t know much about him but this brief bio, from his website:

“Evolutionista is the design and music moniker of independent Oakland artist Griffin Crafts. As Evolutionista, Crafts delves into downtempo blending ambient curiosities with beat-centric sensibilities. Fusing a command of technology with passionate devotion to art, Evolutionista hopes to invite and ensure healthy evolution for all beings.”

I love these spacey sounds and listen to this mix often when I’m looking for soothing, inspiring sounds. Enjoy.

biNGH: New Meat

Interplanetary trajectories make for systematically erratic positions and opportunities. Scattered like bits of fluff in a space dust storm, the wonders of this modality are infinite and varied. Letting go of the normal needs for position and velocity awareness leads to an almost intoxicating stupor of flavors, textures and intergalactic interactions. Such yang embodying trips, heady, rising, unsettled, bursting, glowing hot and bright, are inspired and short lived by their very nature.

In time, the fire burns low, the wind dies down, and the life returns to the earth. Internal transmissions take over the condintuitive channels of the extroversionary energies and it is time for internal reflection and grounded embodiment. Returning from far flung oRbiTal paths, tightening the circuits and letting the exploratory energy continue, with internal probes and present tense specialization, shifting from cosmic to embodied, from yang to yin, from far flung to grounded, from summer to the darker times... Out of the dying fires of extroversion, a new body is constantly discovered, New Meat is born.
This mix is a celebration and an exploration into the transition that comes over all of us, the process that is practiced, one direction or another, with sinusoidal regularity and chaotic randomness with every shift in life, with every dawning day and setting sun, with every change in the season. This is a celebration of the infinitely vast, endlessly varied, readily accessible temple that we are.
The work of the following artists is entwined with the verbage of Richard Freeman. Listen and enjoy. Taste some New Meat...

Chiron Transmission 1 : Golgotha

chiron

Greetings from the friendly Burners here at Destination Burning Man, and welcome to the latest mix from DJ Playaduster: "Chiron Transmissions 1 : Golgotha." Much of this podcast is shrouded in mystery and codes, but it appears to be a missive sent from the outer fringes of our solar system, a musical message that originates from the proto-comet Chiron.
New MP3 Player (works on mobile devices)

Old MP3 Player

Discovered in 1977 in its eccentric orbit between Saturn and Uranus, Chiron is known in some circles as the "Rainbow Bridge" or "Wounded Healer," a humble, benevolent guide that can assist humans by keeping us moving forward on our proper spiritual paths. In early February 2011, Chiron entered the watery realm of Pisces, activating the pure power of potential, the manifestation of the unconscious and transformative healing through (re)union with the divine.
The frequencies found in this podcast are believed to have originated from Chiron, with DJ Playaduster serving as a musical midwife in order that they be perceived by the human ear and widely disseminated through our dBM channels.
Contributing artists include Bill Laswell, Rena Jones, Phaelah, Tipper, Heyoka, James Blake, Boards of Canada, Aphex Twin, DJ/rupture, Kim Hiorthoy, Ezekiel Honig, Yo-Yo Ma, Shackleton, PantyRaid and Thriftworks, with vocal musings from Joni Mitchell, Timothy Leary, Hekter McElliott, Pema Chodron and the Tangerines.

Subsonic Sonata

This one's dedicated to the devastating beat creator......

How does this latest mix from DJ Playaduster fit in with his recently-unleashed
Bass Chakra Therapy / Wobble Chronicles series?

It is still unclear how this particularly tasty blend of bass-positive music fits in with
alla that chakra therapy bidness and we are open to theorizing from dedicated listeners. But this much we know: there is still the continuity of serious down-low subwoofer-friendly basshead music mixed into a flowing river of soulful low-end revelry. One difference is that this poem is less dependent on Whomp and Glitch and other Left Coast bass-hop tomfoolery.

Instead, it moves across varying landscapes of moody, swirling, dense grooves and emotions. BASS is the only constant, the liturgy speaking to the recesses of your primal animal soul.

Subsonic Sonata features Luke Vibert / Shackleton / Fever Ray / Bluetech / Nosaj Thing / Boxcutter / Zomby / Rustie / Matt Shadetek / Mimosa / Noah D. Roomate / Roots Manuva / Coldcut / Hedfunk / Four Tet / Burial / Ana Sia / ill.Gates / Heyoka / Bassnectar / Tipper and / The Field \\.

Playa Dawning

This mix from DJ Edubious flows with that 4 am, pre-sunrise come-down vibe. It also sets a different tempo than any other Radio dBM mix -- this is one is strictly downtempo but still brings some glitch, house, breakbeat and organic vocal vibes to soothe you no matter yo' mood. We're sure you'll find the right space of mind to settle into this chill electromix. Headphones and low-light highly recommended!

Less than a month until the portal opens. We'll see you on the Playa -- check in at Center Camp's camp registry to find out where we've erected Camp dBM and the dBM dome, then bike on over for a cocktail and some live mixing by the dBM crew. We know you're out there and we'd love to meet you personally in Black Rock City!

A Lament for Tibet

(LISTENING TO THIS MIX ON HEADPHONES IS HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!)

DJ Fundi's "A Lament for Tibet" podcast, posted a few months ago at the
Podcast Cafe, is inspired by the Dalai Lama -- the Ocean of Wisdom, Holder of the White Lotus, protector of the Land of Snows and an incarnation of Avalokitesvara, Buddha of Compassion. It is dedicated to the merit of all Tibetans who are enslaved in their own homeland.
